641033 2008-02-17 19:24:00 You can bet some of the highly-paid executives at Sony Japan are breathing huge sighs of relief!!! Sony finally got something right.

Too right!! :2cents:

And BluRay really does sound a lot cooler, even if it is a meaningless word. :p

Hmm, not too sure. I believe I read somewhere there was a few different ones, I'm not sure if there's a standard yet. (Or if there ever will be). I think the word "Violet" was used.

Thats probably completely wrong though.

641036 2008-02-17 20:36:00 i say "let's watch a movie"

don't really care what format it's in aslong as i can play it - might change with a new tv though

speaking of which, which format had the most restrictive DRM?

641037 2008-02-17 20:40:00 Problem is, HD DVD has DVD in the name, and Bluray doesn't.

"Let's watch a Bluray tonight, shall we?" just doesn't quite sound right

You must be young:-)

I came through:
Television! What is that? (Both Black & White and Colour)
Tape Recorder! What is that?
VCR, CD and DVD the same.

My brother and sister and I would sit beside the radio and listen to various stories on set nights long before TV came to New Zealand.

You will soon get used to Bluray and just as you are getting used to it something else will come along to upstage it.

Technology moves much faster now than the change from B/W TV to Colour or Records to Cassette Tapes you will not wait decades for change.

We have MySky and a HDD Recorder and have done for a couple of years or so here and my wife still says "tape such and such program" instead of "record it" Or "shall we watch something on tape".

I guess that even when Bluray comes in some people like my wife will call them DVD's.

BR does. It also has region coding.

641039 2008-02-17 23:42:00 BR does. It also has region coding.

And until I can get one without regional coding I won't touch BD with a 40 foot barge poll. Why pay $40~50 here in NZ for something you can land from Amazon for about $NZ30 or less.

I was about 7 when this funny new thing called "DVD" came out. Of course nobody used it because the players cost $1000+.

Sounds a bit familiar ..... :p

641041 2008-02-18 00:56:00 Microsoft has spent quite handsomely investing in HD-DVD technology, I believe. Would this mean their Xbox HD-DVD players will gradually be phased out?

Imagine this: "Hey Bruce and Ray, let's watch a blu-ray!"

All Blue-Ray players use blue lasers, no exceptions.
