Try Czech. You'll know you're making progress when you can say "strč prst skrz krk!" (Look it up on Wikipedia.)

640353 2008-02-14 22:28:00 Interesting, both myself and the mrs want to learn together so we can practise from each other.

I had to do crash courses in some languages in the army, like Bahasa Indonesian I think it was called and Tetum, sort of similar languages like that. They were quite simple to pick up.

640354 2008-02-14 22:36:00 Meh? English, Afrikaans, German, Xhosa (a bit), Zulu (a bit) and currently busy with French and Spanish. Spanish probably more usable world-wide. Asian languages - I think Chinese will be a major requirement to know in the future.

640355 2008-02-14 22:58:00 English is my second language. Born in Indonesia, so Indonesian is my first language,

I am Chinese in blood, though, but I cannot speak Chinese.

640356 2008-02-15 00:42:00 Anybody else got a second or third language?

I can speak some rather "colourful" language when highly annoyed, does that count? :p

English is my second language :p

speak Norwegian (obviously) and Swedish, plus some German and Spanish as well.

Not sure how long you have been in NZ but have you found that you are losing the ability to speak your native tongue since being here?

A German friend who came here in his mid-twenties really struggled when he went back "home" for a visit after 15-20 years living here and not speaking German. He couldn't understand them and they couldn't understand him.

Yes, Foxy, same here. "They" say I talk with a devious accent these days, and it's only been 11 years!!! I still understood them perfectly, but that could be due to the millions of exSA's flocking to NZ these days.

Nearly. It is "Bahasa Indonesia" (if directly translated, it means "language Indonesia"). It is similar to Malay language spoken in Malaysia. :)

As for me... let's just say I am capable of speaking five languages (in reality, some of them are dialects rather than languages).

Does javascript count? :p

Cheers :)
