788775 2009-07-04 03:37:00 Hi all,

I know these questions always get asked. What laptop to purchase, for under $1500?
I dont need it for games so it doesnt have to be a mega ;-)
Most shops, Dick Sm, Harvey Norm etc, have big flash "deals" but unless I run around comparing every model and price i dont know whats any good.

I understand processors and Ram and hard drive size etc. So just maybe what to avoid, or what models are any good.

:nerd:

Cheers, Vic.
PS. giving up on fixing other Pc at the moment :illogical

788776 2009-07-04 03:44:00 Asus and Toshiba are the brands to go for.

How about something like this?

788777 2009-07-04 03:46:00 Depends, what are you planning on useing the computer for?? is there anything that you want/need in extra features like bluetooth, wireless, eSATA. And what is your price range.

I agree with blam on asus and toshiba but HP are good for performance and looks.

788778 2009-07-04 04:24:00 Yeah eSATA, would be nice, everything else I think is kinda standard these days. Wifi, DVD writer.
I think Toshiba seem to have a lot of features for the buck.
It'll mainly be used to store mp3s and photos and internet usage.

788779 2009-07-04 04:31:00 You will also get a free upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium when it is released.

The Toshiba has all the features and speed you'd ever need, and if you decide to upgrade the ram in the future(currently the A300 laptop has 2 slots 1gb in each) then you could grab a stick of 2gb DDR2 800 RAM and upgrade it yourself.

Or Sony. But SOny would be too expensive.
So what Blam6 says............

788781 2009-07-04 07:28:00 Sony would be to expensive. if you can get an upgrade to 1.5gb RAM i'd recommend it. and (from my point of view) avoid the centrino and other low end processors found in the entry level PC's because they cause a lot of 1-3 seccond lag when running apps such as MS office word '07 when opening a menu or choosing a template. if you get eSATA then make sure the hard drive you get actually supports eSATA. wireless N is starting to feature more in laptops but again you won't benifiet from 300mb/s N speeds without an N compatible router

this isnt applicable now but if I can i usually wait untill boxing day or the next excuse for the retailers to sell off their product at a cheap price. got my HP DV5 that way and bargained in a laptop case 2gb flash drive 3yrs waranty 3GB RAM for $1500

788782 2009-07-04 09:26:00 Dell ftw. Good looks and excellent pricing. jwil1 (65)
788783 2009-07-06 22:31:00 Gawd, I went to Dick Smith. Found a A300 Toshiba, thought this would do the job, but Dick Sm wouldnt sweeten the deal, what so ever. Not even a $30 mouse with it, and we were paying cash! Unbelievable!

Also, went to Harvey Norms and they did offer a few extras, but didnt actually have any of the model we wanted, still in their box!
So im still shopping around!

788784 2009-07-06 23:01:00 My friend wanted a low cost computer to do everything except watch movies, multimedia editing and playing games (which leaves...? probably only web browsing etc).

So a netbook would have suited except the screens were too small. In the end she got the cheapest toshiba from DSE. Basically the cheapest laptop which wasn't a netbook.
