| 642472 | 2008-02-21 08:42:00 | Hi Guys No we can see why there is an exodus to Australia. Bunnings staff say their conunterparts in Australia get $6.00 an hour more than the $12.00 they get here ! I loved their placards on tv tonite - Lowest Wages are Just The Beginning. Perhaps Mitre 10 could try "Low is Good ?" You can see why Helen and Michael do not want to talk about it Regards Digby |

All my cousins are working in Oz. For some people, even Auckland is just not a major city in the world. I believe Oz is a bit like NZ and a bit like a larger place in the world. I mean NZ is not a NYC, LA, Paris, Venice, or a Tokyo. Even people who have postgraduate degrees working professional occupations (not incl specialised fields like medicine) - NZ is difficult to fund a mortgage. I don't know but I think, if you are in project management or such in NZ you may have a similar purchasing power like a office administrator or co-ordinator in Oz? Campbell live did a show last year about a guy who worked in NZ" before, as a call centre operator he was getting $50,000. I sorta agree with Bunnings management response on the news - NZ is operating in a v different environment - there is no way NZ can match Oz payments even by the same store in Oz Bunnings. Maybe they can get a bit but the same goes with many industries in NZ. IMO that's just what its like here. If the purchasing power was worst in Oz we would instead see people coming home from Oz. |

I have a mate, who is a fully qualified electrician, and he is going to work in Oz, in one of the mines, because he can get about three or four times his NZ wage in Oz dollars. He is only going to do it for about a year though, just to get the most of the mortgage paid off. |

| 642480 | 2008-02-22 22:10:00 | Bunnings employ Bunnies in Australia, they are the supplier of last resort for me - staff are well nigh useless when one can find one of them - Bunnings is full of cheap goods from China - no parts service for products they have sold, and they are not the cheapest - I find shopping for hardware etc at Bunnings Australia a frustrating and less than satisfying experience - I prefer Mitre 10 just because they seem to know what Customer Service is. As far as the cost of living is concerned in Australia, I live in Brisbane, and one still gets more for one's money here than in NZ - The major problem here is there is a large duopoly that exploits the consumer; between them the Woolworths Group and Coles Group account for around 75% of the retail sales market (including petrol) and that is unhealthy. We have a German supermarket close to us Aldi,(this group has about 200 stores in Oz) and they are about 35% cheaper than the big two. As for Oz booze prices the CUB products, predominently VB, costs significantly more here than in NZ, but being a non drinker, what do I care. |

I loved their placards on tv tonite - Lowest Wages are Just The Beginning. Perhaps Mitre 10 could try "Low is Good ?" You can see why Helen and Michael do not want to talk about it Regards Digby The thing is, that NZers pay the same if not slightly more than Australians, for the same goods they purchase at Bunnings. Also the costs of operating in NZ are probably cheaper, so there shouldn't really be any reason why they can't pay a similar, or the same wage. I personally don't like these offshore companies (mainly Australian) coming to NZ, setting up these large big box shops, and sucking money out of NZs economy , sending our money back to Oz. They come in , undercut the local stores on some of their products to get the punter in the door, and over charge on other products, where they make the moeny. The less money they pay for NZ staff, they more money that Australia gets.It appears that NZers have very little loyality to NZ owned business and retailers, and just go for the cheapest thing, which in the long run, doesn't help NZ economy. I think there should be a public campaign for NZers to support NZ owned business, like the buy NZ campaign. Even Australia and The US are more supportive of their own companies than we are. |
