790806 2009-07-14 07:49:00 Which part lost you?

Most of it.

What I am looking for is just a OS that will boot up super quick, and let me get onto the web. But it must also support the general stuff like PDF reader and Open-office.

My only problem is that I have a low spec pc, and im on dialup using a generic softmodem.

Thanks Everyone!

790808 2009-07-14 10:40:00 DSL or Puppy then..DSL = Damn Small Linux
Quite a few of us here started using Linux when win[dows]modems were near impossible to get working with Linux. It may have changed now. Try the suggested ones (DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu) and see how you get on.
The latest versions of these can sometimes be found as a free give away with some computer magazines.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

790809 2009-07-14 11:14:00 My suggestion:-
screwing your old box of bits with Linux could be more trouble than what its worth unless you have reliable internet access to get help from this forum. If you have access then maybe.
At some stage reasonably soon you will accept that your hardware needs replacing so why not start putting money aside. Get a decent amount of ram and whatever works for the other bits. Get on a basic broadband plan, its worth the money. Then your Linux might work without going AWK. If you are going to buy a Windows OS buy the latest one ie Vista or wait for W7. Vista is far more stable than XP. Gripes come from people trying to run Vista on 1Mb ram etc or because they don't like change.
Spend some money, doesn't have to be a huge amount, drive you insane otherwise.

790810 2009-07-14 11:29:00 Ofthesea. A 700mhz Celeron will not run W7 or Vista smoothly. Blam (54)
790811 2009-07-14 11:38:00 True, maybe I wasn't being clear enough. Chuck the box, get another one, doesn't have to be top end. Ofthesea (14129)
790812 2009-07-14 11:39:00 Why? Its perfectly useable....everytime something gets old you trash it?

790813 2009-07-14 11:40:00 Sir Prospect, in your original post, you mention your computer outputs to the TV. Via s-video? Myth (110)
790814 2009-07-14 11:45:00 Hm maybe Ubuntu Remix would suit this kind of setup...certainly has a nice GUI...LightBox...hmm Blam (54)
