642976 2008-02-24 01:18:00 Have you thought about changing to a vegetarian diet? It would be better for you and better for the planet as well.

Bloody hell, where did that come from?

642977 2008-02-24 01:46:00 Yeah..it's a market/bear pricing lately.

Our milk is $4.95NZD /3.79 Liter

Ouch. And we're complaining about milk/dairy prices here. What does a 500gm block of butter cost Joe?

Lamb/Beef is primarily fed on grass here, though given the current drought in several regions some are being fed imported grain. There were trials done a number of years ago (not sure if it was ever commercialised) where animals would be fed on a mix of grass and herbs for a week or so prior to slaughter, to "infuse" some flavour into the meat.

642978 2008-02-24 03:27:00 A 500gm of butter is almost the same as 16 ounces, which is 453.59gm, and that's the common size here for real butter...unsweetened and unsalted. It costs about $3.00USD / $3.71NZD for the store brand, and as much as $4.95USD / $6.12NZD for a name brand. SurferJoe46 (51)

No, no, no. That's against nature. Human beings are not born to be vegetarians; just like cows and sheep, if you were to change their diet and force them to eat meat .... guess what's going to happen?????

642980 2008-02-24 04:22:00 Looks like our NZ beef and lamb are much cheaper and better quality in the US . It's better in quality is understandable and logical but why is it so much cheaper over there? That doesn't make any sense to me. Logically, it should be much more expensive considering freight & insurance charges, etc. There is something wrong somewhere along the line. bk T (215)

BK - here's a suggestion... if you want a decent steak buy a whole sirloin. Then cut it to desired thickness. I reckon 1 inch is about best. Somehow getting the whole thing makes for a far better tenderness and taste.

Might be some trade deals/tariff rate payment structure involved for price reduction. I recall years back NZ sold butter (possibly reduced price) to Russia, in part exchange for their cars...

That's almost right. Russia reneged on payments for dairy produce we sent them and an arrangement was made where we took Lada cars and Belarus tractors in part payment (I think we lost about $100m on that one).
For a few years we saw Dairy Board consultants scooting around in Ladas:lol:
