642637 2008-02-22 10:31:00 As previously mentioned, you can go with cheaper RAM. Tastech (http://www.tastech.co.nz/) sells 1GB sticks of DDR2-800 for $40 which is what I'd go for.

Both the Celeron and Sempron CPUs that you mentioned are pretty rubbish for gaming. I'd seriously consider spending a mere $40 more and get a Pentium E2140 1.6Ghz (awesome for overclocking, should be able to get it running @ 2Ghz with the stock heatsink).

8400GS is pretty weak too, only 64bit memory bus so just don't expect too much out of it. :P

642638 2008-02-22 11:15:00 And don't worry about sweep. I'm impressed you can afford to buy ANYTHING! I bought AOE1 at your age with my own money. That was a giant stretch, so good on you. And GL with the Intel. There's really no point having brand loyalty, just go for what's best and cheapest at any given point. Anyway... Thebananamonkey (7741)
642639 2008-02-22 18:25:00 You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

The Semprons and Celerons are limited by their L1 and L2 cache sizes. Increasing clock speed doesn't change that simple fact.

However, when I had a Sempron it had a lot of overclocking headroom and that is what I hear about the range generally.

Forget trying to game on a PC on the cheap.

Get an Xbox 360. Almost every title you can get for PC you can get for the Xbox.

642640 2008-02-22 19:04:00 super budget gaming system for casual gaming
celeron and sempron f

-Raidmax Elite 208B ATX Tower Case, 450w PSU, Black.
-Geforce 8400GS, 256MB DDR2, PCIE, VGA, DVI, S-video.

Theres the sort of gaming little kids do - cartoon type games off the net and then theres real gaming.
You're wasting your money on this stuff for real gaming.

If you have to ask your mum, then do it. My neighbour did, he ended up with a good system.

The PSU in that case is to be avoided. The card is hopeless.
Ditto the CPUs.

642641 2008-02-22 20:15:00 What is your budget anyway?

For approx $500 I was able to get an AMD 4800+X2 CPU with an Asus mobo (as I don't have a PCi-E card, I needed a mobo with integrated graphics); 2 sticks of 1GB Kingston ValueRAM and 80GB SATAII h/d

642642 2008-02-22 22:19:00 Lol, imagine at a LAN party .

"Hey mate, what CPU your rigs got?"

"uh . . a celeron"

*Awkward silence*

The price difference between the super low-end to the low-mid range pcs aren't much but you usually get 3-4 times the performance .

TasTech Office Upgrade Box:
• Intel Pentium Dual Core 1 . 8GHz CPU (E2160)
• Gigabyte GA-945GCM-S2L Motherboard
• 1024Mb Adata DDR2-800 Memory Module
• 80Gb Western Digital WD800JD SATA Hard Drive
• Asus DRW-1814BL Dual Layer IDE DVD Writer, Black
• ATX Tower Case, 400w PSU, Black, 2 Front USB Ports
• Integrated Graphics, Sound & LAN
• Fully Assembled & Tested

^Tastech (http://www . tastech . co . nz/) have that for $440 . You could probably get a 160GB HD for $20-$30 more . The 8500GT would be the minimum I'd go for if you were relatively serious about your gaming, 8600GT is a much safer bet though .

Avoid the 8400 like the plague, the 64bit memory bus will choke it and make you weep . :p

642643 2008-02-23 03:42:00 my new system idea:
Pentium Dual Core 1 . 6gig (OC'ed to like, 2 . 2)
2gigs of DDR2 800 ram
160gig seagate sata
DVD supermulti - liteon
8500GT 512mb from Sparkle
Generic case
500watt raidmax PSU
GIGABYTE OR ASUS . . .

that should be about it, now i have to sell my duron system and my AMD system to afford it . Anyone interested? lol .
I've been told to stay clear of tastech by Overclockers . co . nz because they don't give refunds?!?!

And don't worry about sweep . I'm impressed you can afford to buy ANYTHING! I bought AOE1 at your age with my own money . That was a giant stretch, so good on you . And GL with the Intel . There's really no point having brand loyalty, just go for what's best and cheapest at any given point . Anyway . . .

I sell stuff on T-Me, sorta like my part time Job .
