642006 2008-02-20 04:41:00 Meeting to talk about stopping killing altogether would be futile. But meeting to try and put breaks the scale of carnage is at least a step in the right direction. Any number above zero may well be too many, but if any number above zero can be saved, then isn't that worth doing?

It certainly is, but it's a big pity that the main perpetrators are not present. They are the ones that need to be making a commitment, otherwise (unfortunately) it may be just talk.

The Israelis and the Palestinians are, of course, a story all of their own. Thank you for reminding us of that. In that part of the world it is a national sport.

642007 2008-02-20 07:45:00 A great weapon, we used the Hunting BL 756 version, a good large beaten zone, great against troops and soft skinned vehicles - not many walking wounded in the beaten zone, more effective than napalm. KenESmith (6287)
642008 2008-02-20 07:54:00 Banning cluster bombs will only stop 0.00000000000000000000001% of carnage and atrosities. Now if you banned man.... rob_on_guitar (4196)
642009 2008-02-20 08:58:00 Do you mean a bit like the Israelis and the Palestinians?

Not just them. The problem with cluster bombs is on the one hand the US likes to portray its modern weapons as pin point precision, but on the other when folks like the US, or the Israelis or any number other nations get into "wars" where the targets aren't so easily "pin pointed" they turn to things like the cluster bomb - the modern equivalent of blanket bombing - to try and get their enemies via saturation.

All fine and dandy from a killing point of view, but like land mines, cluster bombs are the munition that keeps on giving. When the conflict is over, there's a huge number of these things still around and they kill. And when they've been sown over civilian areas, it's the civilians who end up paying the price. Not that that isn't the trend with war since the 20th Century anyhow ...

If the manufacturers would make the damn things go bang like they are supposed to do it wouldn't be so bad ...
