That sums it up Jack. After learning to fly light years ago I can still hear the
Instructors voice echoing around the cabin "Look out" when I turned and didn't do so. I soon got the message.

Apparently the pilot was only 17.. I suspect age and inexperience had a lot to do with it. 17 is very young to be in control of such a dangerous vehicle. Also I assume that it was the plane that hit the helicopter, and not the other way around, due to the relative speeds. It would be very difficlut for the copter to get out of the way of a plane that was huttling towards it.

640996 2008-02-18 03:05:00 Bearing in mind the speed of approach, evasive action would be difficult . In addition, a helicopter has quite a blind spot below and to the rear for an aircraft approaching from that direction .

A high wing Cessna has blind spots to each side, above the wing . According to one report, the Cessna was flying south and the helicopter, west . Therefore the idea of each turning left wouldn't really apply . It would seem to me that the helicopter might have been just above the left wing of the Cessna, coming from his left, and therefore not seen .

I guess better brains than mine will be attempting to solve the mystery . :horrified

640997 2008-02-18 03:36:00 There is no ATC at that airport.
Pilots would need to spin your heads around to look with their own eyes regularly.
Even if it was in Wellington and using the ATC, if you put the plane to the side - away from the main traffic you can sign off with the ATC .. and you do your own joyride without ATC.
In a Cessna you don't have a fancy radar screen with flying obstacles around you ....
That airport is without ATC so they rely on each other's radio contact and to fly with their eyes.

640998 2008-02-18 03:40:00 As I been advised, the Wellington aero school does not fufil student loans but this one at the north does. I would then assume that more students are north? Nomad (952)
