790785 2009-07-12 00:11:00 If your modem is a winmodem (the "soft" modem), then chances are you are going to be VERY MISERABLE with interneting with Ubuntu. Mine was a Conexant one, and it can only view the internet at 14400bps, thanks to the limited driver. Then I abolished Operation Ubuntu completely.

But you can buy the complete version of the driver with $US5, I think.

Or PCLinuxOS

I find it comes to personal preference.

If you want a bit of speed how about Damn Small linux running off a flash drive?

winmodems used to be a real No No for linux and unless this has changed then the chances of getting on line without an external modem is very remote.

790788 2009-07-12 01:18:00 Vista.........

Vista was the odd brother of windows 7, really it should be considered a very early beta of W7

It's changed. It's still rather annoying getting them to work, but most of them do work these days.

I don't recommend trying though unless you are experienced at using a Linux shell environment, and (for some modem drivers) able to write the necessary C code to get the damn driver to work :groan:.

790790 2009-07-12 08:29:00 I know if its over 10 yrs old Ubuntu wont look at it let alone install on it  Tried to install it on this 1999 laptop PCuser from here gave me. It was an APIC issue
When booting you just add noapic
I would give PCLinuxOS Minime 09.1 a try as it is a minimal install and then you just add what you absolutely need. Have a look at this review (temporaryland.wordpress.com).

790791 2009-07-12 08:34:00 yer I would if it didnt stop, AFTER it said something about it being pre-2000.. Cant type much or select anything. if I cant see anything, I think it kept on rebooting, it just went round in circles saying the same thing Speedy Gonzales (78)

I meant when it reaches Grub.

790793 2009-07-12 09:17:00 (This will cause a debate) :D One thing I have found, is Ubuntu, with each new version, some actions are getting closer and closer ( on the surface) to how Windows works.
This way if a person wanted to use Ubuntu, its not so much of a change. No arguement here. Ubuntu has always been aimed at the Windows user and making things easier for them to change

790794 2009-07-12 09:18:00 Dont matter now, XP is on it. And its not connected to the net, and it doesnt have a network card in it anyway. So, even if I managed to install Linux on it, I cant update it. At least with XP, I can use a flash drive, and copy whatever updates to it then update it

Doesnt grub only come up if you have 2 OS's or something? If it does, then doubt if I'll install XP and Linux on it since it has only got a 4 gb hdd. And it doesnt get that far anyway.
