| 642967 | 2008-02-23 23:11:00 | What happen to the quality New Zealand Meat these days? Bought some sirloin steak from Pak N Save last week, cooked it and it's like rubber - worst than gravy beef! It's so bad that we got to throw it away! Went back to Pak N Save and complained to the butchery dept and was told that: " sometimes, we do get the OLD cows and OLD pigs" . It's not only 'sometimes', but it's always . I can hardly buy any good meat nowadays! Not from Pak N Save, Foodtown, Countdown New World . What a shame! NZ is one of the biggest meat exporters in the world and yet, we don't have good, quality meat to eat even if you are prepared to pay top prices! Quality of life in NZ is deterioting day after day . Air pollution in Auckland is also getting very bad . Looks like we are going to become a 3rd World country, or we are already?:D We get some really great beef and lamb here in the US . . . and it's from youse guys . It gets shipped to our markets and restaurants and our speciality stores . It's delicious . You should taste it . |

The difference between what you buy in the supermarkets and home grown has to be experienced to be believed. We do buy the odd piece of pork or lamb from a supermarket but again it's pretty much rubbish compared to what you get from your farmer neighbour. One thing you might want to look at is finding a home kill butcher. People like ourselves do not always want a complete beast. We negotiate with the butcher to sell a side and another customer may want to swap it for a couple of Hogget's. Just find a homekill butcher and ask if a customer want's to sell off some meat. If you strike it lucky you won't want to go back to a supermarket again. | Gordon62 (11771) | ||

| 642972 | 2008-02-23 23:44:00 | What’s the prices like Joe? I went to buy some fillet steak last Friday and the sods wanted $47:95 a Kg. It’s still there, they can age it for me. :D I got some Prime Rib here (Product of New Zealand)....$4.99USD /1.0lb or about $6.17NZD /.45kg. That sounds a lot cheaper than youse guys pay. Lamb is a little more dear...but I like the NZ product as it has a stronger flavor than the US product. They grain feed them here and I imagine they range them in NZ...or they inject them with "range-fed" flavored chemicals to fake me out. I had a NZ friend here who (said he) would feel the lamb's liver to see if they were worth butchering and eating. How'd he know by feeling their livers? :stare: I just reverse-Googled the prices of your beef...and it looks like about $40.00USD/lb! Ouch! |

| 642973 | 2008-02-24 00:09:00 | I don't know your location, bk_T but we have a couple of very good outlets here. Not always more expensive than the supermarkets. One we shop at fairly often has a loyalty card making the overall cost cheaper than what it would first seem. They are have their own farm and the meat is organic. I sometimes do buy meat from supermarkets but try and guage the quality. Not always possible with the ready packed stuff, I know...specially when they hide the scrappy, fatty bits underneath. Pctek is right..your cooking method makes a difference. I think meat may be like the dairy products and overseas prices often dictate what we are charged. Wouldn't be so bad if we got the export quality as well. Cheers, Marnie |
