| 641157 | 2008-02-18 09:26:00 | 1. Get rid of GST on Fruit and Vegetables. 2. Get rid of junk food from school canteens/tuck shops and sell healthy food, like fruit and vegetables. 3. Insure that all bottled water has no sugar in it, its just stupid, you want to be healthy and they put sugar in it. (Alot of the major brands of bottled water have sugar in them, not all). 4. Compulsory sell only sugar free drinks and food at school canteens/tuck shops. 5. Make cooking a compulsory subject in primary school, intermediate and high school, and have cooking competions against other schools and then sell the food as well at the event to raise money for cooking and sport equipment. 6. Make school sport a compulsory subject and that team practice and sport games during school time and after school/on Saturday is compulsory as well. Oh and school sport is a compulsory subject at primary school, intermediate school, and high school. 7. Ban all junk food advertising completely from tv,radio, and print advertising. 8. Tell the food and drink etc. manufacturers that New Zealand wants to get healthy so they have to make their stuff as healthy as possible to be allowed to sell in our country and they have to submit their stuff to our scientists/cooks etc., first to check them out and see if it can be made healthier or it passes and gets a health tick and is allowed to sell here. (To get rid of colours, additives, sugar, and other stuff that are bad, and not needed in the food and drink etc.). 9. To have an operation paid for by tax payers you cant be obese,so you have to loose some weight first before you go to hospital. 10. School sports and cooking competitions to have their own tv show with the school head boy/girl and deputy head boy/girl from each school talking and representing their school because its local content and it will develop more competion amongst the school kids and pride and self worth etc. and it will travel the country and there would be regional competion and national competion as well. 11. Bring back Top Town and have a kids one and a adults one do regional and national for both of them and then do one with the national winner of the kids and the national winner of the adults battle it out-Battle Of The Ages-Wisdom vs Youth!!!:D So we have fitness and food/drink stuff to get New Zealand healthy. |

| 641159 | 2008-02-18 11:19:00 | Its the amount of activity done, not so much what you eat. Having seen someone that used to scoff a 2.2Ltr of coke a day I would disagree with that and don't tell me that diet coke is any better as the sugar substitutes only increase ones appetite. |

And I really like number 9 ! And I would add 1 2. That supermarkets be told to cut back on the HUGE space they allocate to Coke and Lemonade etc. Say just two rows of each ! 1 3. And that Coca Cola be made to remove all of their fridges from Service Stations and Dairies which I understand they provide free in return for them being FULL of their sugary drinks. 1 4. And that Coca Cola etc be made to announce the amount of sugar in each of their drinks now, and then REDUCE it by 20% each year till it is down to 20% of what it is now. I have some other really radical ideas which are probably a bit too far un-pc, but really fat / obese people disgust me. And we have to get them when they are young. Regards Digby |

| 641161 | 2008-02-18 22:16:00 | I agree up to 7... when you start to get a little bit carried away. The govts job isn't to be some sort of heavy handed life nazi. And it's kind of strange hearing some of you talking about how intrusive the labour govt is (I don't get that) and then hear this rubbish come out after. If people are fat it's only their problem. Nobody elses. We can educate, but from then on we're a free democracy, people can do what they want. | Thebananamonkey (7741) | ||

Eating "correctly" is their decision in the same way that giving up smoking is their decision. You can become slim (and stop smoking) if you want to, not because someone else wants you to. It needs to be your reason and your decision and no amount of chastising will work. These people (smokers, druggies and other habits) will stay fat, etc, because they want to. Of course they make many excuses as to why they can't give up eating (heredity is a good one) but it still comes down to the individual. While I agree with removing GST from food, incentive - how ever well intentioned - does not work. Solution: Get off your big fat arse and do something about it!:annoyed: |

| 641163 | 2008-02-19 01:57:00 | You loose much more weight by eating less than by being active . As Maurice Williamson said, "there were not many fat people in Hitler's concentration camps . But being thin doesn't mean you are healthy . Some form of exercise / activity is best and you still need to eat but you need to eat the right food . |

| 641164 | 2008-02-19 02:27:00 | Last night in the local dairy there was an absolutely grossly fat individual . I watched in amazement as he bought a large Coke, a large sweetened energy drink, 3 packets of crisps, and about 12 bars of chocolate . He finished off with cigarettes . I reckon he will be a couch potato and probably watches loads of TV - but the message doesn't get though . I suppose some will continue to poison themselves, stick odd jewellery in parts of their bodies and get tattoos no matter what we do to try to stop them . At least they do advertise their intelligence so that the rest of us can note it and avoid them . Tom |
