2008-02-25 03:51:00 | No worries, FYI, I agree with pretty much everything you've said. Oh dear, and do you drive a Holden as well and have taken driving courses (I'm joking ok). People have different attitudes to driving and some are safer than others.

2008-02-25 03:51:00 | while it is safer for everyone to drive the exact same way as everyone else, its just not life . it never happens and never will . you will always get those that go a bit slower . what you call dangerously slow depends on your point of veiw . 70km/h slow for a car but 30 km/h is fine for a tractor ?? end of the day you just have to be tolerant of everyone else . SolMiester . . . . . if you ge time off come up north here for a blast, a bit different to those empty motorway napier roads ;) :D :p as the local cop once told me . . . . . "you drive too good" ;)

2008-02-25 04:14:00 | What's wrong with younger drivers? You could give the argument of experiance vs inexperience in terms of young vs older people on the road. Old people have had more experience walking, yet why can young people do it better? (Don't answer that, it's rhetorical) But I mean, a lot of younger drivers (maybe not learners/people starting their restricted, tho some are good) are actually very good drivers. They may do stupid things on the road, speed etc but who's going to come out better off, doing the same speed, if the car in front of you suddenly spins out and stops dead in your path? I don't even know why I'm arguing that, just saying.

2008-02-25 05:41:00 | If you're used to driving at 200kph+ on a race track, then of course you'll find 100kph slow. Whether 100kph is slow or not depends entirely on the road, the conditions and the type of vehicle you're driving. 100kph is just over 60mph. For equivalent roads in the UK, the limit is 60mph or less. You could argue the limit here is generous. Given the relative lack of training most people have when they learn to drive in NZ, 100kph is a perfectly appropriate general limit. You can harp on about unlimited speed on the autobahns all you like, but we just don't have the quality of the roads, trained drivers (with the correct attitudes or awareness) or level of enforcement to warrant increasing speed limits above the current level. Moreover, the age of our vehicle fleet is probably far behind that of Germany's. We still have a high proportion of old cars on the road. Put NZ drivers on German roads and I guarantee there will be carnage. They do actually have some extremely horrific crashes on the autobahns. There have been a few times I've been 'cruising' on the open road here at 100kph and glad I haven't exceeded the limit because of an unexpected incident that occurred (eg. cattle running in road, car pulling out from blind driveway). Very few roads here are truly 'open' in the sense that they are free from unexpected hazards like that. I can't understand why you, Solmeister, get all stressed out about 'idiots' doing 80kph. They are neither a danger nor an inconvenience. There's absolutely no reason to get upset about them at all. Driving safely on public roads isn't about getting from A to B in the quickest time possible. And - I'm about your age, have driven in several countries, and frequently drive around racetracks for fun! I don't understand your contempt for other members in this thread. The only people I get upset with on the roads are those with irrational impatience, people who don't look where they are going, don't indicate, tailgaters, people who speed because they think they are more capable than anyone else, and the person the other day who decided to cut me and several other cars up on a roundabout because they suddenly decided to turn right in the left hand lane!

Your over the top comments (the use of **** is just as bad) and losing your rag at several members has resulted in a short ban. Don't rejoin this thread unless you can keep it cool and discuss the topic without this sort of behaviour. This warning goes out to everyone. |

2008-02-25 06:14:00 | elderly (who drive the rest of the nation crazy with their 40/80kph antics) I think you are being a wee bit unfair. Not all elderly drive under the speed limit. I've seen all sorts of people driving at 40kph. As people have said before it is about tolerance on the roads. I can see road rage becoming forum rage :o One day you will be 75 (based on stats) and I maybe you just might have a different attitude then on driving. Now I must go and get some petrol before it gets to $5/litre.
