641555 2008-02-23 23:03:00 wasn't there something like 6 fatal crashes on the weekend when it started raining again? it's like people forgot that wet roads are slippery

(though there was a lot of oil etc built up on the roads that needed wasing off, and did make it worse)

But people are nicely wrapped up in their comfortable cars and get out of touch with whats happening outside. Thats where riding a motorcycle is enlightening.

Of course who knows what contributed to the crashes but weather conditions are likely to have.

641556 2008-02-24 20:49:00 "But if you really want to see "crazy" drive around Ireland when the farmers have just baled their hay. The many tractors are seen pulling a large trailer of hay bales at 5kph and in many cases difficult to pass because of the narrow and/or windy road. You might think that they should pull over, but where? They do not have a metal - or any - shoulder so there is nowhere for them to go, so you endure it."

Struck similar in Ireland(narrow roads and tractors).
Approached a T juction in a small village on the Dingle Penninsular, In a slow moving stream turning left (coming from bottom of T)
Coming from the left and turning into the bottom of the T was the biggest John Deere tractor and trailer produced(well it looked like it to me). He was going around no matter what. I had two choices. Either let him hit me or turn hard left (couldnt back up as car behind). I chose to turn hard left. I didnt know it but the curb was about 12 - 18 inches high and almost removed the door sill and made a hell of a mess of both left doors. Fortunatly I took out insurance so no problem but would have cost a small fortune($E1000=$NZ2000)if I hadn't had cover.

Soft landing for children ejected in crash

Latest in 4WD safety features. Your kids are ejected from your vehicle when an crash occurs. They landed on the grass but I think that even grass can be fairly hard on impact.

One does wonder about "seat belts".

641558 2008-02-25 01:34:00 Slow drivers aren't a hazard because they are going slow. The hazards are impatient people who can't tolerate other road users, don't anticipate, and don't know how to overtake properly. Maybe you haven't learned that much from all your years of experience on the road. Experienced drivers aren't necessarily good drivers. A good driver wouldn't complain about slow traffic because they'd know how to negotiate it safely without any stress.
You didn't have to say you were a tailgater. But given your attitude, it wouldn't surprise me if you did it regularly.

****, i can not believe the dribble some of you lot are spouting.......FKS, for the ****ing record, I am NOT repeating this, I drive usually @ 100Km on CC, I sometimes speed to overtake, I do not tailgate and for all the granpa's here, 100km is slow, i'll say that one again, 1 0 0 K m i s s l o w !, I have had high speed driving courses, even entered a couple of amateur races, I have my racing ticket from the UK!

I have had a motorbike, however, I feel that a bike is not as stable of the road as a car at high speed due to the weight of said vehicle.

I dont need 20 somethings explaining to me their full 5+ years of experience of driving and what they feel are safe conditions for driving or whether or not they think I am an impatient driver, cause I was driving when they were a twinkle in there daddy's eye.

I have driven over 15 countries, left and right side, 4 lane to single lane and all that time NOT 1, ever accident. I'm not going to spout that I am the next Johnny Reid cause I'm not, probably left it too late, however, I dont need to here prattle from users here waxing lyrical how good they are keeping within speed limits and 80-90Km is okay on the OPEN highway, cause you dont know ****!...

Rant over.

641559 2008-02-25 01:49:00 Well solmeister has this all tied up. Road deaths are caused by people not driving fast enough. So everyone set their speedos to 170 and no deaths anymore. Then we can petition our local MP's to get rid of this immoral revenue gathering that's going on.
Autobahns are mostly restricted. And not everyone on the derestricted ones feel the need to drive at 200kph. Many choose to just stay at 100. It's comfortable, and for the most part is fairly safe. Also a lot cheaper.
If you're going on a 4 hour drive at 90kph then you only lose 24minutes. And for the most part when I've driven too fast I've had the cars behind me catch up in towns. It's dangerous, there's very little benefit to it time-wise, and everyone on the roads thinks you're a tosspot when you do it. Just be patient, and live. Brandshatch pah! Giles Villeneuve was the best driver of his age, but that didn't help him at all. Things happen that you can't control, and when they do then the faster you're going the less chance of walking away. Motorsport deaths are all too common, and just because you can drive on a track it doesn't mean anything on the road. The two are just so different.
100kph limit means nothing. Conditions are everything, and people like you are what make the roads dangerous. There's no need to hurry when driving. It's just not worth the risk. 10 minutes late? Or dead? I think I'll be late thanks.

Just for the record, if you are going to spout road limites to me at least get it right, Europe is mostly 120Km or 110km, not 100km

BM, you are full of it!

641562 2008-02-25 02:12:00 So Sol is still in denial.

When someone comes around a corner on the wrong side of the road and is heading straight at you, the closing speed seems fast enough for me. This happened to me on the Takaka hill road on Monday. No one in my car knows how the guy on the Harley managed to get back on his side of the line. If we hadn't been going uphill to start with he wouldn't have had the space to do it. AFAIK motor racing is for vehicles going in the same direction.

100km/hr is slow ON THE RACE TRACK. You seem to be confusing the race track with the open road. The open road has unpredicable events which is why they limit it to 100km/hr and people vary tremendously in skill and also there are all sorts of vehicles on the open road. There maybe times it is safe to do 120km/hr but whether you like it or not, the law makers have dictated that you shall not go faster than 100km/hr cos if you do and we catch you, we will penalise you.
