641515 2008-02-22 02:20:00 no such thing as a safe machine. the human body isn't made for impacts over 30kph (falling from a tree, basically)

though today's cars are built to do 200kph and remain stable (especially german ones on their autobahns), the human body isn't.

says the one with the motorbike

It was me referring to the deterrent factor and I stand by it. I was living in England when they did a study on speed cameras.
The fact is, if the #1 priority of camera's as stated by NZ Police to PREVENT speed, then like seeing a police car on the road around you, a camera in the open will reduce speed then and there, as apposed to receiving a speeding notice 2 weeks later when you have already sped!!

641516 2008-02-22 02:42:00 Tosspot?!

Think you are missing the point, I didnt say crashing at high speed is safe..d**khead, I said driving such and such vehicle, designed to travel safely at those speeds, ie:, no speed wobble or vibrations, non-locking braking systems, advance damping sytems for bumps!!

Paul, your father in law is the kind of person who creates accident as people get frustrated having to follow behind him.

I thought it was you that was missing the point. If you always had control over what happened on the road, accidents wouldn't occur. Your car's advanced features should be to give you a better chance at reasonable speeds.

You don't have to worry about my father in law, he stopped doing anything some years back.

641517 2008-02-22 02:48:00 been driving 27+ yrs, never had an accident. I am current driving the best personal vehicle I have ever had. Yes, there is safe in a vehicle

There is a first time for everything. You might well be the model driver (oops, I forgot your recent speeding fine) but that does not mean that someone passing you in either direction is or that they are not loaded up with drugs or booze and at a moments notice you get to be in the death notices in the following day's newspaper.

No modern vehicle is "safe" if put in certain circumstances. Maybe get an armored personal carrier, a tank or an old lada (heap of sh** but built like a cargo container) you might stand a chance of total safety.

641518 2008-02-22 02:49:00 Paul, I think you knocked the nail on the head, if I always had control over the roads, so obviously we need to do something about people who drive too slow.

I mostly drive with my cruise control set at 100km, it is only when passing that i have to put the pedal down, as I refuse to follow and drive @ 80-90Km. 100Km is not that fast, ****, they have less accidents in Germany than we do, and they have no speed limits.

641519 2008-02-22 02:57:00 they have less accidents in Germany than we do, and they have no speed limits.

SolMiester Germany do have speed limits just like every other country. It is only "some" of their motorways that have no limit. (A recent documentary on German motorways and the cars that use them on SkyTV)

There are several cars that can exceed 400 kmh which would be great on the nice straight wide German motorways but very few places in NZ that you could hit 400k+

I used to get some fairly funny looks driving a Double Decker bus on those same motorways. My Bus peaked out at 85kmh maybe 90k downhill with a tail wind and with the punters out pushing.

641520 2008-02-22 03:00:00 Well hell Bantu, you dont think in the years I have been driving that there is the other driver factor?

I am trying to get across here, that there is no reason for model vehicle to be traveling less than 100Km.

641521 2008-02-22 03:01:00 Bantu, we are talking open highways here, not class B road, so as said, in Germany there are no speed limits (& for the dullards, I mean the autobanns) SolMiester (139)
641522 2008-02-22 03:04:00 Depends on conditions really. Good road light traffic sure go 100k, windy road maybe less, wet or icy road maybe less, busy road less.

You would NOT want to be with my father in law in a car, let alone at 100K. Yet he tootles around the UK in heavy traffic conditions every day. In NZ he is a nightmare to be a passenger with. And lets not get started on Mother in law.

There is no correct answer for speed except 100 max where applicable.

641523 2008-02-22 03:19:00 I am trying to get across here, that there is no reason for model vehicle to be traveling less than 100Km .

??? you try doing 100km up a hill with 3 ton load .
again its not slow cars thats the problem its mentally slow drivers . you know the ones, they just can't make up their mind what to do until its too late .

your idea of slow speed needs some major adjustment . 80-90km/h is not excessively slow .

no vechile is safe . you want safe . . . . . . then don't crash . its got nothing to with fancy gizmo's but with the driver behind the wheel .

"safe car" concept is wool over the eyes PC crap . just marketing BS from car company's . all it does is makes better idiot drivers .
to show how stupid its getting there is now a suggestion that drivers drive with hands on the steering wheel at 4 & 8 o'clock to save them from arm injury when the air bag goes off! good one, don't hold the wheel correctly and you will crash but heh your arms will better for it! :(

all this car safety only applies to those in the car, not the poeple on the receiving end !

Crumple zones and all that came about originally because Americans wouldn't wear seat belts and kept smashing through windscreens and breaking them selves on hard bits on the dash.

On Top Gear they had the safety guy there while they crash tested various things and he admitted those tests are all done at 40km, do the same at 100km and you're jam.

As for "1963 crap", the 1963 crap disintegrated into tiny pieces and as I always wore my seatbelt I never got smeared across the road.

Theres 2 dead guys here today just crashed down the road in their ultra modern safe vehicle. They were overtaking and met another vehicle.
