642956 2008-02-23 20:25:00 What happen to the quality New Zealand Meat these days? Bought some sirloin steak from Pak N Save last week, cooked it and it's like rubber - worst than gravy beef! It's so bad that we got to throw it away! Went back to Pak N Save and complained to the butchery dept and was told that: " sometimes, we do get the OLD cows and OLD pigs".

It's not only 'sometimes', but it's always. I can hardly buy any good meat nowadays! Not from Pak N Save, Foodtown, Countdown New World. What a shame! NZ is one of the biggest meat exporters in the world and yet, we don't have good, quality meat to eat even if you are prepared to pay top prices!

Quality of life in NZ is deterioting day after day. Air pollution in Auckland is also getting very bad. Looks like we are going to become a 3rd World country, or we are already?:D

642957 2008-02-23 20:30:00 Whereabouts are you located? The key to getting decent food, whether it's fish, meat, vegetables or fruit, is knowing where to buy from. Supermarkets are the landfill for crap produce. Greg (193)

Have tried all those butcher in this area like, Ausie Butcher, Mad Butcher, and all those butchers, etc. They are all the same.

642959 2008-02-23 20:41:00 How did you cook it?

I always found Aussie Butcher good, although I didn't use the East Auckland one.........

642960 2008-02-23 20:52:00 I think most of NZ meat is Oz crap.

Most of our meat is probably exported overseas.

What you get / buy now is small (like roasts), compared to what you brought a few yrs ago.

It's quite simple. All the good cuts get sold overseas. We get left with the crap that's not worth exporting.
Chances are, you'll get a better leg of New Zealand lamb in a UK supermarket.

If you want a decent cut of meat here, go to an organic butcher and steer clear from supermarkets. Better still, buy a whole animal and DIY.

I rarely buy meat from the supermarkets these days. They are too overpriced for a start.

The best is to have your own farm:D
