641986 2008-02-19 21:33:00 Around 120 countries will attend a five day conference in Wellington with the aim of banning cluster bombs. Major munitions making countries Britain, France and Germany will be there.

A treaty has been signed by 158 countries that limits the use of landmines, not banning them outright, you’ll notice. Countries attending this week's conference are working on a similar agreement against cluster bombs.

However, the countries that really should be there, United States, Russia and China the major makers of cluster bombs, are not taking part.

Okay, so landmines and cluster bombs are not nice, but there are so many other ways of killing people that I’m certain people like Mr Bush senior, who I understand has made piles of money from making and selling munitions, will not be too worried. As long as there are people in this world who want to kill other people in some manner, and others willing to supply the means to do so, people like Mr Bush will continue to prosper from the fanatics.

I’m certain that the majority of people would welcome countries banning cluster bombs and landmines, but what about all the other weapons? Why can’t they ban them all as well? What would Mr Bush do then?

641988 2008-02-19 22:48:00 We also need to ban drugs. d darroll (12090)
641989 2008-02-19 22:48:00 I, also, will be otherwise occupied.

That week I've dedicated myself to planning the assassination of the American Senate.

641990 2008-02-19 22:52:00 Ban over vigorous hugging too. You could do some serious back damage with one of them. Also de-bark people with loud, whiny, high pitched voices too. Also cars. Who needs them? How about we only let the 3rd world have weapons? We can lead by example. When they see how childish they've been they won't need them anymore. I don't see how nobody has seen this before. Thebananamonkey (7741)
641991 2008-02-19 23:19:00 What's the difference between a cluster bomb and any other bombs. If you are handy when one is dropped near you ,you won't worry about what sort it is.

Your suggestion is about as silly as the USA trying to ban other countries from making nuclear bombs.

641992 2008-02-19 23:27:00 I'm only surprised that the delegates and all of their hangers-on are not meeting in Queenstown. We regularly get teams of similarly good- intentioned government agents and NGO agents swanning around the world on junkets. There have been several in New Zeraland in the last month or so. It will be interesting to see where they plan to meet next time after their five days here - the last day spent considering where they can meet next - cost of no importance. The airlines and hotel industry must love them. Scouse (83)

Thank You, bombs are bombs

Very true, Jack. Dead is dead. It surely does not matter how you do it, which is the point that I was trying to make.

If you are going to ban landmines and cluster bombs (and that is assuming:lol: that everyone does so) then that limits - just a wee bit - how you kill people. But why do you want to limit the killing method? Who cares so long as they're dead?

But there are some rather silly people out there with doubtful good intentions, that want to be spoilsports by suggesting that when you kill someone you should make it swift and tidy. Blowing heads, arms and legs off is just not nice.

Next thing you know it will escalate and the goody goodies will want to ban other methods of killing, such as the nuclear bomb and, according to the Yanks, only people that they say are responsible should have them. Does that mean someone (apart from the Yanks) deem the Yanks (and the Poms) responsible?

Where will all this stop? Perhaps peace will break out? A world without armaments and fighting? You would ask of anyone with thoughts like that, "What part of cuckoo land do you come from?"

There are countless thousands of these types swanning about.
