641145 2008-02-17 06:09:00 Having just seen on TV3 a news item that suggested a ban on "junk food" advertising is mooted by some people to stop obesity.

The news item mentions advertisements targeted toward children in particular.

Now for my questions which are targeted toward those that are supposed to look after children.

1: Does your child have disposable income?

2: If your child does have disposable income I ask from what source does this come?

3: Does the child do a paper run or etc?

4: Are any of the children influenced by TV adverts in any way? The people who buy nappies may be influenced by adverts but can we say the same for children? Have you ever heard a child in a supermarket say, "I want this brand of nappies compared to the other brand."?

Sorry for my rant!

Certain drugs are banned but are used nevertheless even though they are not advertised on TV.

We do not see advertising on TV for tobacco products any more for example. Has this reduced the number of people whom use the product?

641146 2008-02-17 06:21:00 If you smoke, you smoke. Doesn't matter what tv says.

If you eat junk food, you eat junk food. Again, doesn't matter what tv says.

Banning crappy adverts for junk food (tho I don't see it as much now days?) is a start, but probably won't make much difference.

641148 2008-02-17 08:55:00 Obesity is in my eyes people who are not willing to work off what they worked in.

It isnt that hard to stay in reasonable shape, but admittingly advertising does make things better then what they are. After all they are promoting something to make a dollar, no matter the effects.

641149 2008-02-17 09:36:00 Ban advertising altogether. Then we rid ourselves of a useless drain on society: ad agencies and marketing 'professionals'. :D johcar (6283)
641150 2008-02-17 20:50:00 Its the amount of activity done, not so much what you eat. pctek (84)
641151 2008-02-17 20:57:00 Or we could just try and teach our children to be responsible for what they eat. Educate them about the food pyramid. Also, as parents, learn to do the same things ourselves to set good examples. Kids will always want sweets, parents should moderate that. Ads make a difference, how could they not? With the saturation of products on the market, how do you know what's what if not for them? But at the end of the day, obesity is about self responsibility. Plain. Simple. Thebananamonkey (7741)
641152 2008-02-17 21:40:00 There are many things to be done to get rid of the scourge of obese people.

Banning TV ads for fast food till say 9 pm would be a small start.

Educating mums not to buy it would be the next step.

Putting all obese people in a room with one lettuce sandwhich a day would be the next.

You loose much more weight by eating less than by being active. As Maurice Williamson said, "there were not many fat people in Hitler's concentration camps.

No more of our TAXES for fat people with diabetes and no more stomach stapling !

641153 2008-02-17 22:00:00 Everyone deserves health care. It's not the govts fault that they're that way, but it's their obligation to help them. They pay tax too. And stomach stapling takes a burden off the health system by reducing hospital time further down the line. People are fat because they eat too much and excercise too little. Because they sit in front of tv all night even when there's nothing on. It's their own fault, they live with the results every day. If that's not enough motivation to get out and excercise then why should we care? Let them be fat, it's not my problem. Just educate kids about the risks, and get the junk out of school canteens. In my schools there was very little else. Just pies, coke, chips, and sausage rolls. And we wonder why they get fat. Thebananamonkey (7741)

Dont know about you , but all the obese people I know watch a hell of alot of TV. Playing ads after 9 won't do much.
Like Pctek touched, activity is hugely effective. Well exercise really. If you let yourself turn into a human mountain of fat that you can't even go for a jog or help yourself, serves you right.

But when I was a student and had no money, I lived off a bag of spuds and starved most of the time. Thats when I noticed there is hell of alot of fast food ads everywhere. TV, magazines, radio, buses, banners, billboards etc
