790765 2009-07-11 03:58:00 Hi Everyone!

Im just completely fed up with Windows ME and want to switch to Linux. What distro should I choose?

Specs of computer is :

700mhz Celeron
184mb Ram
Asus CUPLE-VM M/B
20gb Samsung HDD

Thats about it. The Monitor is the Tv, so the linux needs to be a friendly looking thing with good GUI.

I need it to use:
-Dial-up Internet
-Open Office or Office 95
- Read PDF files and so on

Thanks!

790766 2009-07-11 04:12:00 Office wont work with Linux, you'll have to stick with Openoffice or other. How old is it? Speedy Gonzales (78)
790767 2009-07-11 04:23:00 fed up with Windows ME No wonder :p Its crap, ME was the biggest balls up MS ever done.

Its completely hopeless - MS pulled it off the market after a short while and that was only 1 reason.

If you wanted to try linux, then Ubuntu ( the latest version 9.04) may work on your hardware - but you have to look at the age of the PC as well -- Its very low spec.

I have ubuntu on a PC acting as a file server, as well as a separate drive on a workshop PC -- I know I'm going to regret this -- But I actually like the new version.

Bare Minimum requirements

It should be possible to get Ubuntu running on a system with the following minimum hardware specification, although it is unlikely that the system would run well. You should use the Alternate install CD to attempt such an installation.

* 300 MHz x86 processor
* 64 MB of system memory (RAM)
* At least 4 GB of disk space (for full installation and swap space)
* VGA graphics card capable of 640x480 resolution
* CD-ROM drive or network card

Recommended minimum requirements

Ubuntu should run reasonably well on a computer with the following minimum hardware specification. However, features such as visual effects may not run smoothly.

* 700 MHz x86 processor
* 384 MB of system memory (RAM)
* 8 GB of disk space
* Graphics card capable of 1024x768 resolution
*

Sound card
*

A network or Internet connection

Remember that any Windows software wont work on Linux "as is" - you will have to use open source like Open office for example.

790768 2009-07-11 04:29:00 I know if its over 10 yrs old Ubuntu wont look at it let alone install on it  Tried to install it on this 1999 laptop PCuser from here gave me. It was an APIC issue Speedy Gonzales (78)
790769 2009-07-11 04:36:00 Windows 95 would be an upgrade from ME  pcuser42 (130)

That's rubbish - Ubuntu will work fine on older hardware, athough it may need a little massaging. If you were having problems with APIC, that usually means the APIC support on the board was crap - try booting with APIC disabled.

790771 2009-07-11 05:25:00 It didnt get that far for me to disable it in the setup. It boots from the cd checks whatever / spits the dummy, then says something about it being 1999 / pre-2000, something about APIC thats it. Then stops

And its not in the BIOS if thats what you mean. Too bad now, XP is on it.

790773 2009-07-11 06:19:00 Its about 8 years old.

And I'm dual booting the thing with windows 2000 as well. Becuase ME looks a bit better, but most software supports 2000 and not ME.

And I doubt i can run ubuntu on 184mb of ram.

What about puppylinux?

790774 2009-07-11 06:23:00 Cant see why Ubuntu cant run with 184 mb if I can run XP on a laptop with only 96 mb Speedy Gonzales (78)
