790220 2009-07-09 08:07:00 Hi Team,

I have a hitachi hdd which unfortunately doesnt have a usb driver for Vista (im running windows 7).

Google shows that this is a common issue with this particular series of hitachi deskstar hard drives, where if you attach it to a usb powered enclosure, windows says no driver.

What i have done is installed virtual pc 2007. My idea was to attach this hard drive via usb and then its readable in the virtual xp system. Am i able to enable USB devices in this virtual system. I wanted to attach the hitachi drive, and also another external hard drive via usb, so i can pull the data off the hitachi.

I looked in the options in Virtual PC 2007, but there was nothing in the settings re USB settings.

Is there another way i can do this??

790221 2009-07-09 08:09:00 Wouldn't it be the enclosure more than the hdd?? Since the hdd isnt the device thats got USB on it? Speedy Gonzales (78)
790222 2009-07-09 08:12:00 VPC 07 does not support USB.
You could clone the virtual HD and use it in Sun's VirtualBox which supports USB.

Then you could copy the files over back to VPC

790223 2009-07-09 08:36:00 Hi Speedy,

The same usb enclosure works fine with all of my other hard drives. Just this particular hitachi deskstar keeps throwing up no driver. There are lots of google results with other users with the same drive giving the same error.

Hi bob doe nz, i'll see if i can try your method :-)

thanks for the assistance

790226 2009-07-09 10:33:00 hey bob doe nz, got virtualbox running and it shows one of my external hard drives (the drive where i want to copy data to) but its not showing the other external drive in my computer, even though the usb icon shows 2 USB devices ticked. so im a bit stuck as to how to make my computer show both external drives.

virtualbox says both usb devices have been "captured" but my computer shows just one

I'm not sure what's causing that problem. I've just tried using USB devices on Virtualbox and found it rather flaky.

790228 2009-07-10 10:51:00 it got very fustrating last night! i dont know why it would only show 1 hard drive. the other hard drive shows as "captured" but interestingly it wouldnt show a drive letter on the usb icon. eg the seen hard drive is noted as e:, the unseen drive is noted with no letter.

perhaps it can only do 1 device type at a time?

i connect the hard drive, you hear the usb connection sound, it says "captured", it says device driver loaded and "your new hardware is ready to use"

arrggghh, driving me nuts!

okay, time for another solution.. any ideas?

790229 2009-07-10 11:44:00 What about getting the Hitachi drive installed as a USB device and then setting up a shared folder. Transfer the files and to the shared folder and then move again to the new drive. bob_doe_nz (92)
