644658 2008-02-28 06:21:00 We had to say a rhyme at school one year (and remember it)

It started something like

King William the first was the first of our Kings
Not counting Aethelred, Egbert and things
He had himself crowned anointed and blessed
At westminster Abbey in 1066

I know there was more, but i can't seem to find it, and it doesn't help that Aethelred can be spelled at least 6 different ways,

Any one out ther know this rhyme? or has better luck searching than I, t'would be appreciated

644660 2008-02-28 06:51:00 You started off on the wrong foot with "King" just search on "was the first of our Kings" leaving the quotes on and you'll find it. PaulD (232)
644661 2008-02-28 07:09:00 I haven't searched it, but I thought the first line was:

"William the First was the first of our kings"

"William the First was the first of our kings"

That's right, (I haven't searched it either).

My memory tells me it went something like this;
"William the First was the first of our kings
not counting Ethelreds, Egberts & things
he had himself crowned, anointed & blessed, in 1060, I needn't tell you the rest
but being a Norman, King William the First, by the Saxons he conquered was hated and cursed
and they planned & they plotted far into the night which William could tell, by their candles alight
So William decided these rebels to quell, by ringing a curfew a sort of a bell
And any Saxon found out of bed at 6 o'clock sharp, it was off with his head".

And that's as much as I remember.

If not, let us know. Don't want to post the lot if you have what you want.
