643783 2008-02-28 02:14:00 If you are buying a computer because you want the option of being able to upgrade every screw and circuit board with your own choice of hardware then you would get a Windows PC which would be someone like beeswax

Simple really.

Or din't want to pay 2x for just a shiny box like 95% of people and me (beeswax)

643785 2008-02-28 02:26:00 hard drive, optical drive, cpu, ram

righto, On New Years eve my home theatre PC died, I replaced the MotherBoard (New Asus) CPU (dual core AMD 4800) and 1 GB PC 800 DDR3 (I think)

It cost me $200 delivered, zero to install.

Now, whats the deal if it happened to your iMac?

643787 2008-02-28 02:32:00 If it broke you would get it replaced under warranty like any normal bit of electronics gear.

I use mine as a duke box/sound system all the time though the stereo with no problems.

643788 2008-02-28 02:51:00 I guess I could install a Mac OS on my PC and run it for a while and see what I think prior to buying one.

Free D/L and instruction on Apples site.

Although the Mac Pro I messed about with at my daughter's school seemed very intuitive indeed compared to Vista.

Photoshop on both are very similar indeed.

643789 2008-02-28 03:14:00 Leopard is not a free trail download - although you can purchase Leopard from Apple's site. vitalstatistix (9182)

Ah, but then what happens to the hard drive? ;) At least on a PC, if hardware fails and you need to send it in, the hard drive can be removed. ;)

Same on a Mac which is why you can swap out a 250GB drive for a 500GB drive that you sourced from Pricespy or somewhere.

If you are buying a computer so that you can just do stuff and not have to worry so much about whats under the hood - you would get a Mac like me .

Totally agree! A mac is perfect for people who want something that works without hassle; it is much like an appliance you use, like a toaster or microwave, but instead of heating up food, you use it for email, multimedia production etc etc . Grandma/music producer/video editor dont care what version the graphics card driver is* . It just works, and looks pretty good as well .

A PC is more for true nerds who care what version their graphics card driver is*, in order to get best use of the hardware's speed . Typically ugly, or if the 'new' non beige cases are anything to go by, garishly ugly because that is the cost of having complete freedom in hardware .

I'm not saying that grandma's cant send email on a PC, or that music/video cannot be created on a PC . I actually fail to see why macs are 'better for multimedia production' than pcs . Can't you get equivalent software that runs on the PC? ie it is not the hardware that makes a mac good for multimedia production? (they are intel inside anyway . . . )

*Some generalisation . Some mac users will care about drivers . Some pc users wont .
