644285 2008-02-28 19:57:00 The 80GB HDD in the entry level model is not even a SATA drive its an old PATA. stormdragon (6013)
644286 2008-02-28 21:21:00 In terms of speed, it makes no difference when you are talking about a 1.8-inch 4200 drive, and most of the other differences are relevant only to higher end desktops and servers:

There's no advantage to SATA over PATA when it comes to drive speed. That's because the 133MB/s speed of the PATA interface is much faster than the fastest HDD or SDD. - forums.macrumors.com

From what I have read, Samsung has a 250GB SDD in the works - they manufactured the current MacBook Air drives.

644288 2008-02-29 04:00:00 In general, yes you are correct motorbyclist. The MacBook Air is going to be much too expensive for many people, it is after all an expensive machine, but it doesn't mean that Apple won't sell them to students as they are very well suited to student needs, especially when you need to carry it everyday of the week to, from and around university along with all your other gear. The interesting thing about Apple's products is that they often lead to other companies following their lead (runs and hides from Metla :D ) and fill in pieces of the market not catered for by Apple. Overall, I think the MacBook Air will lead to a greater number of light weight laptops priced to suit all areas of the market. :)

:illogical

no, you aren't listening

99.99% of students can barely afford an asus EeePC , let alone a $3000 laptop with only one usb port that can only really function if the student also has another fully functional machine

i just came from a browse around the major chain stores and had a look at the macbook air on display

my initial impression was "it isn't that thin". then i saw the small white macbook next to it for half the price with better specs. it's a no brainer for students

I would agree with you there motorbyclist especially in NZ. The MacBook is a far better option however in the US which is Apple's main market at the moment, the MacBook Air at $1799 is still reasonably affordable.

I see ""The ThinkPad X300 notebook starts at approximately NZD $4,199.00 (excl GST)". So much for that cut-price Chinese craftsmanship. You're not going to get much change out of five grand for this baby. And I thought the MacBook Air was overpriced at $2999."

Interesting huh ;)

Certain. Lenovo said it, Business week had it too and so did numerous Lenovo reps.

644291 2008-02-29 05:57:00 Apple will be moving on with the SSD, apparently there are 250GB SSDs in the works.

PC owners are made out of sterner stuff than you lot. Thats why we dont go for the over-priced, shiny crap every time.

It's not only a matter of speed PATA drives are being phased out in a couple of years they will even more expensive and harder to source, when the HDD fails. A 4200 drive will also have slower seek times compared to the standard 5400.

by my calculations that makes the MacBook Air $1200 cheaper than the X300.
