644598 2008-02-28 20:45:00 In 1999 I spent some time in my old home Blackpool. I was delighted to find that despite much opposition by some people the promenade trams still ran from the south of the town all the way to Fleetwood.
I still lived there when most of the suburban trams were done away with. Not many people realised that tram companies in Britain had to be responsible for the road surface between the rails and some distance outside them. Thus heavily subsidising other road users. This helped kill them off.
Most of the existing Blackpool trams were built in the 1930s, are comfortable spacious and fast. Can you imagine 1930s busses still being used?
Talking to the staff on the trams I was impressed by the way they made the case for keeping the trams. On busy days umpteen trams carrying over 100 passengers each will be used to clear massive crowds returning from the Pleasure Beach (A sort of Disneyland place but better).
No other form of transport could handle it.
I also remember using the Liverpool trams to travel home at nights in the 1950s. Running on their own track they were REALLY OLD, but still out performed the road transport. Trams in the right places are still the best solution. And even in the wrong places have their uses. One of my favourite rides was in the Vienna trams from Schonbrunn to the city centre. Three car devices that narrowly missed houses in their journey they took for ever to travel the trip - but what a way to travel.

644599 2008-02-28 21:09:00 Hey could AK do with ferries like what Sydney does if they have heaps of water  I know the wind but ...

Or use things tracks of some sort to get them to vantage points then alternative transport kicks in .. to bypass as much hotspots as needed.

644601 2008-02-28 22:05:00 Maybe if the North Shore project gets enough support then they may do the same in other areas of Auckland.

Some roads in some parts of Auckland have been built with light rail in the future plan. One example is Ti Irirangi road has a big bit down the centre for future rail of some kind.

A few years ago there was talk of a Monorail to link Auckland CBD, to the Airport to Manukau City. There was plans and drawings in the local papers on it, but not heard anything since.

644602 2008-02-28 22:20:00 Talking about buses I now live in the north of Wellington so we get the MAN or Mercedes :D They are newer and AC but it does still get misty inside . Even Porirua which is north than us, gets these fancy buses than the Greater Wellington . They gets a mixture I think, new and old . They are by good old Stagecoach ;)

Sometime ago I caught a bus to my old suburb to see my Dr, man those are old . Wellington used to have red buses when I was a kid like 10+ years ago . Some of those buses are still being used now . The seats were hard and I had a overweight person sat next to me  I took up like 20% of that 2 seater seat .

When I went out I thought in Wellington what can they do . . sure this what they have now is not sustainable into the future . They just did that motorway thing bypass or whatever it was called . No money so cannot build subway . The motorway is really 2 lane than a 3 lane cos when it gets to the tunnel its a 2 lane become 1 and then later it becomes 2 afterwards, too few lanes you cannot even do a toll lane .

I think NZ is a bit like a small pop, it just cannot afford it .
It may not be a Tokyo, I guess Hiroshima with the trams can be like Chch and maybe Auckland can be like Hakata with a small but expanded britomart . Wellington's tram is gone .

I think for Wellington here maybe a monorail sys around the city . Cheaper than subway . The good thing with it is that north of it, the rail system is ok cos all it go is state highway 1 or 2 (northern east or west) . I would think monorail to Newtown and Hataitia would be nice and thru to the airport so that greater Wellington is addressed . Its certainly a big project but me thinks subway is just out of reach, so maybe monorail .

Roads to me appears not sustainable, build as much, it just invites more people to use it and over time it would just need endlessly expansion while the tracks you just install more carriages .

Then its one thing . The Hutt Valley gets heaps of traffic, we arn't over there but there is a train going that way . Dunno . Lost . Maybe they want to drive or have to or lack of trains . Where I live I just miss the train, cos the trains goes into a hill so the both suburbs next to us get its but not us . I am sure they can knock a hole in the hill and we can wait for the trains inside that thing .
what suburb are you in?

644603 2008-02-28 22:43:00 I'm in Churton. Which means I need to bus out to J'ville and then take the train. But that bus trip prob take a good 15mins before it goes up the hill of Churton, I am at the bottom of it. Walking to Jville prob take a good 30 mins.

The other thing is whatever developments are done there are a lot of opposition so its v hard to do anything.
