644195 2008-02-27 17:55:00 Not me, I would never consider online storage while my internet is charged by the MB.
also my upload speed is too slow to make it a viable option and the security issues are just to big....

I use a NAS (Network Attached Storage)

Great for sharing files over my home network. Kids home work and stuff can be accessed from any PC. same with our music collection, its not cluttering up hard drive space on every PC. I can physically take it somewhere else and plug it into another network. I've used it a lot at gaming sessions to make game patches available to all - anyone that has ever played BF or BF2 knows the heartache of getting all the PCs up to the same state.

644196 2008-02-27 18:48:00 I have a fair bit of personal online "storage" (actually more webspace/bandwidth than I know what to do with) but wouldn't use it to backup personal files. I just use it to mirror stuff online for whatever reason, as well as a wee bit of personal website stuff.

There's hundreds of free online storage services (mashable.com) around, and one I came across recently was ADrive (http://adrive.com/) (50GB space, 2 GB limit per file, unlimited bandwidth, no file-sharing AFAIK). When comparing these services, a couple of things to look for are allowable size per file and monthly bandwidth usage, where services offering both free and "premium accounts" bump this considerably for a monthly or one-off fee.

644198 2008-02-27 21:11:00 I Back up my files to DVD's and then keep them in the boot of my car.

Online storeage sounds good but with NZ upload speeds would be a pain.

The problem is that you don't know how long these companies are going to be around, espeically the free ones, which can disappear overnight. Therefore if you are doing occasional backups, and then need to retrieve the backup, but the online storage company has disappeared, you are then in trouble.

644201 2008-02-28 01:33:00 True Epson Photo Gallery just closed doors. Now they don't accept new customers and don't accept new photo's from current members. Next month all photo's left there will be deleted. Just redid my gallery w/ flickr.

What would be nicer is a free webhosting which I can attach my gallery but thats a bit hard on freebies with a 100MB size or such.

Yahoo Photo went away as well.

For that reason, I use NZ ISP email and I use software, not webmail. As too for the security. I have email addresses attached to my bank and auction sites and stuff and online stores.

I suspect that will happen a lot more, as these companies try to monetise their website investment . I think a lot of these companies expect to make money from selling their website/customer base . Personally I don't see a lot of money in it for them, apart from advertising on the website, but even that is not guaranteed income .
