644088 2008-02-27 08:07:00 I take public transport. The bus is never on time (10 mins early or 15mins late). Crapcoach.
At times it is not uncommon to see two buses on the exact same route travelling one behind the other. Even though they are meant to be 20 mins apart.

Unless your using Howick & Eastern Buses.

Quality and Service are two words that never work together with public transport.

Had that happen to me.

644092 2008-02-27 09:15:00 I live in a seperate town to the city where I work
Could carpool with a co-worker (who lives in the same town, different area), but seeing as how he and I can't really stand each other, it could make for wonderfully stimulating conversations

644093 2008-02-27 09:29:00 Because I work screwed up hours I either walk, or if I have go to work at 130am - 430am I will drive to avoid all the drunks/homie little punks that think they are gansta/homeless bums/drunks that wont take no for an answer when you say 'I dont have any smokes' etc

Hamilton just gets classier the longer the night goes.

Yes, I know what you mean there, lol. Me and my dad were just going for a midnight stroll one night and these two stoned gangstas followed us around for ages, asking for smokes and still following no matter how many times we said no.

Ontopic : I really like driving, and I don't drive that much. I drive to work and I drive to Uni. Maybe max 100k's a week as it is at the moment and thats not bad. My car isn't particularly fuel efficient but driving is a really joyous experience for me, not to mention the convenience. Public transport just stinks, literally :P When you're driving your car, you have so much freedom, you can choose what temperature you want, you can have the window open or closed, you can listen to your choice of music at your desired volume level, and best of all, you can normally park very close to where you need to be, and you can leave some stuff (like tons of heavy books that make your bag really fat :P) in your car and get what you need when the appropriate class.

For me right now, the cost of transport is still feasible and it will remain that way until maybe petrol becomes like $2.50+ an hour, I might start considering updating my car to something more fuel efficient, but still nothing too granny-ish.

644095 2008-02-27 10:05:00 When I lived in Howick, and worked in the Auckland CBD, I wouldn't think of using my car to commute - yes it took 50 mins for a 20K journey in the morning, but one wasn't all that much faster driving, and the time could be gainfully spent reading, no hassles parking and the Howick & Eastern Bus Company's 10 trip concession card was a far better deal than paying for petrol and parking. But there was a bus stop conveniently in walking distance of my home, and I got off the bus in Symonds Street at the University so it was ideal.

Auckland public transport is a sick joke, the rail service is abysmal, 30 minutes between trains, if one wants to go anywhere other than the immediate downtown area, most bus services just don't deliver.

If they want people to use public transport, then the super brains that run the Auckland Region are going to have to come up with something one hell of a lot better.
This means meeting peoples needs by supplying frequent reliable services that take people where they want to go, at the times they want to travel.
Providing transfer tickets and co-ordinating services so that changes does not involve needless additional travel and long waits in the rain at windswept bus stops etc.
I will wait for a flight of pigs in formation flying over the frozen wastes of hell.

644096 2008-02-27 10:34:00 I would drive to uni if parking space is not a problem around the Auckland campus. Would only cost me around $90 on my 1.8L car per month, whereas the bus will cost me around $145 per month.

It's so annoying when you have to go around town and changing buses when you want to get to one destination.

644097 2008-02-27 10:35:00 why is a motorbike/moped never considered an option?!

riding my little brother's FXR150, an excellent commuter bike we bought for two grand, these past few weeks the worst economy i've gotten from it (and i thrash it) was 30km/L... suzuki claims it'll do 50km/L

even on my 400cc sportsbike, for me bike is cheaper, faster, easier, much more fun and much more convienient than public transport, plus i don't add to auckland's conjestion/parking woes.

and most importantly, there's no bus routes that match my 55km commute home->uni->work->home
