643454 2008-02-26 03:32:00 I heard with Bluray discs, if you scratch them then you're pretty much screwed. Any truth to that?

Oh, and digital downloads will become the next thing....as soon as we can download full length movies within seconds and not instantly be over our monthly limit. (Yes, exaggerated (for some))

depending on your connection the norm in the US is about 10-30 minutes for downloading a movie (5-6GB) from the iTunes Movie Store. They are now doing Movie of the week for .99c too. The selections are not too bad either.

If you get a gift certificate from ebay you can actually download a movie to your NZ account according to APC mag.

kiss your 5GB allowance goodbye :p

643456 2008-02-26 06:27:00 I fear that HD video downloads will become to video as MP3 has become to CD audio. A dumbed down format if it sounds like music so it must be good and highly compress MP4 video which looks like video will become the accepted norm. To really get good HD for a movie you will need about 20Gig per movie. You can get an ecceptable 42 min 720P HD XviD TV program for about 1.1Gig but it's not like the real thing as tranmitted.. paulw (1826)

Blu-Ray discs are supposed to have a scratch resistant coating, so they're pretty hard to scratch.

Don't know how much punishment they can take though.

643458 2008-02-26 22:21:00 You dont do High-Def resolutions in XviD, theres much better ways! Like using h.264 (Definitely prefer the x264 encoder myself). :D

Aaaaand, just for the record, you can get a full-length high-definition movie compressed down to around 4.38GB (So it'll fit on a regular data DVD disc) and it'll still look just fine!

Chilling. You are correct. I took a look at one and the are x264 not Xvid as I had thought.. ..
You would be correct at the file size as the 80 minute 720P pilot for Knight Rider 2008 was about 2.3Gig and looked great..

There don't seem to be too many people complaining about the downloaded movies from iTunes @ 5-7GB per movie in 720p h.264

Taking into account that the format will be upgraded as technology allows.

643462 2008-02-27 09:26:00 Sorry about snarky comments... I've been reading too much GizModo, so been hearing about this for weeks. Too much time on my hands at work. Devils and idle hands etc. Anyway, sorry for anyone offended. And warning heeded. Thebananamonkey (7741)
