644562 2008-02-28 04:48:00 Since heatsinks are pretty much just big lumps of aluminium and/or copper, would you be able to get anything for a bunch of them at a scrap metal dealer?

I'm thinking of proposing to my boss that we donate our pile of old heatsinks to lions so they can remove the plastic & sell the metal to a scrap dealer.

644564 2008-02-28 08:31:00 We had some copper heat exchangers here from an instant hot water system, from back in the day when my wife was consulting on copper corrosion.

Imagine my surprise when I took them down to the scrappie, expecting to maybe pick up $10 on a good day, to find that copper was around $5.30/kg & the ~8kg I had was worth over $40!

So for copper, yes, it would definitely be worth donating a bunch. Aluminium, probably less so.

644565 2008-02-28 10:25:00 We had some double glazing done last year. We were left with the aluminium joinery from the windows they had removed. Was well worth taking the joinery to scrap metal dealers. :D

Cheers,
Marnie

644566 2008-02-28 20:30:00 It is.........but you'd need a lot to get anything worthwhile out of it.
Copper is worth the most and at $5 or so per KG, well, how many Kgs in a heatsink?
