644245 2008-02-27 11:17:00 so i saw the ad again today and realised a fine difference between apple and the rest of the electronic world with their marketing

dell, hp, asus etc all give specs, even if only the good ones..

apple doesn't give any....

so i had a look at the macbook air, expecting the thinness to be mostly a gimmick...

i was horribly mistaken, in a bad way..

no ethernet port (only wireless), no modem, no firewire, no mic/line in, no expandability, only ONE usb port, and most shockingly NO dvd or cdrom drive!

so u you get an intel processor, 80gb harddrive and 2gb ram all for the low low starting price of $3000:rolleyes:

looks like to achieve fashion, they lost function.... must be the "superior design" WMG was telling us about:lol:

but not to worry, you can buy an external usb "superdrive", or wirelessly access other computers' optical drives.... which really defeats the purpose of the laptop does it not? i know if i buy a laptop it will be replacing my desktop for everything but gaming..... and even then the lappy should be good enough.

i mean, is having a impotent 2cm thick laptop, as opposed to a fully functional 3cm thick laptop, really worth the ridiculous price premium?

oh, and the battery is not replaceable, so you can't extend life with a spare battery

comes with 80gb hardrive, or for a small fortune you can "upgrade" to a 64gb solid state hard drive

all in all, for all their marketing BS (nz.youtube.com), the only neat thing was the backlit keyboard... everything else is already offered standard on cheaper laptops by different companie

644246 2008-02-27 11:28:00 I wonder how long before one of our resident Mac fans posts to tell us how all the design shortfalls are actually hot rockin features, and the price is well worth it for such a fine piece of gear.

Anyhow, Personally, I think its utter utter ****, and embodies just about the entire wank factor of Apple products. Along the lines of $200 dollar haircuts.

Having said that, If there is a market for them (aside from the Apple "hip" brigade) then good on them.

644248 2008-02-27 17:50:00 actually, comparing this macbook to the previous ones it's still a ripoff:lol:

there was no previous macbookair. so its pretty hard to compare:rolleyes:

644249 2008-02-27 19:00:00 there was no previous macbookair. so its pretty hard to compare:rolleyes:

So this can't be compared to any other Macbook ever made?

I would love to know the logic behind that.

I noticed this too, watching the TV-Ads..

About the gimmick-ish-ness?

no ethernet port (only wireless), no modem, no firewire, no mic/line in, no expandability, only ONE usb port, and most shockingly NO dvd or cdrom drive!
Sounds a little like the EeePC.. except the EeePC has much more hardware :D
Only ONE USB port??

so u you get an intel processor, 80gb harddrive and 2gb ram all for the low low starting price of $3000:rolleyes:
At least you get an 80GB HDD.. wonder what the battery lifes like considering there's *NOTHING* internally for it to be powering? ;)

but not to worry, you can buy an external usb "superdrive", or wirelessly access other computers' optical drives.... which really defeats the purpose of the laptop does it not? i know if i buy a laptop it will be replacing my desktop for everything but gaming..... and even then the lappy should be good enough.
Thing is the Macbook Air's are another device like the EeePC - UPMD - Ultra Portable Mobile Device. Idea being they're incredibly cut-down so they're super-portable (Dunno about the weight of the Macbook Air thou). They're designed to compliment a Desktop PC, for a Uni student, businessman, not be a total desktop-replacement. If you're after something like that, then Ive just recently seen a friend buy a HP Laptop with something like a 20" Widescreen display.. on a laptop! Its big, its chunky, its got a killer graphics card in it, fast CPU and a ton of RAM but its HUGE and HEAVY! If you're looking for a Desktop Replacement, then go that way.. not the way of a UPMD like the Macbook Air or EeePC

Yeah see the price really sucks, $3K is a LOT! Especially considering I can replace the battery in the EeePC also, and it cost me a whopping $2400 LESS. Not to mention it has more USB ports, wired LAN, Mic / Line-In, SD-Card reader (Dunno if the MacBook Air has one of those or not?)

Yup, but their marketing is great, had so many people say to me within the first week of the TV-Ads "Hey man, have you seen the new laptop from Apple, it looks so cool!", I just smile at their blissful ignorance and nod

So yeah, wonder what the battery life is like...

Personally, Im glad I stuck with the EeePC and saved $2400

644251 2008-02-27 21:09:00 im just gonna wait for the first story of some guy shipping his macbook air in nothing more than a brown paper sleeve - and then try and sue apple cause the courier used it as a gap filler for some heavier items - like the 29" telly in the back ;)

"BUT IN THE AD IT ARRIVED IN A BROWN PAPER BAG SO THATS ALL U NEED!"

i can see it now....

644252 2008-02-27 21:49:00 The weight .. is not that great really. There are 1.2kg laptops or lighter than that for some laptops.

Yes its v thin.

But it still quite wide and deep. Its thin but still takes up room, its not something you can stuff into your coat pocket. For business its great cos you need it and you put up with it .. if its optional and to be runned around with .....

I think in the future we may have foldable screens / keyboards :D Then we can have full size and portable.

644253 2008-02-27 22:49:00 OMG! Where did I put that Manila Envelope???

Chilling Silence: A Card Reader in the MBA? Haha, no way! Mac users don't need card readers for they are inferior!! Oh and according to Engadget, battery life is < 3 hours

I'd rather get the Lenovo Thinkpad X300 anyday. Same price, same weight, almost as thin, proper laptop.

Thats apple for you . Even many apple people don't want it, as they perfer the regual mac books features . I think the air is more of a concept computer, as apple don't release prototypes, they just bring the protoypes straight to market .
I think the air shows how much apple wants control, as everything is internalised and non upgradable . eg . you can't even replace/upgrade the battery or memory, without sending it into apple . Imagine if Dell played this game, there would probably be a huge uproar .
