I remember when I was about 18 some members of the Lyall Bay swimming club went out on the town in Wellington. This was when you should be 21 get get into a bar and usually had to wear a tie. There were notices about saying "You have to wear a tie for entry." I did see a few Members of this club wearing ties walking down Willis St wearing ties and swimming attire. Yep. Around their naked necks the ties were there. Then we have the situation where a person is working over a lathe. Possibly the wrong time to wear a tie. For the few times I wear a tie I also use cuff links and a tie clip. |

I could rant on about the completely ridiculous things men invented for them to wear: High heels for instance. Pointy toe shoes. Dresses. There again. Some Women will insist that the Man wears a tie when he goes out with her from time to time or the venue actually requires this. In my view any person male or female may wear any form of clothing or even not. Would you like a Gang member in full patches or a Nudist arriving at your place whilst you were hosting a small dinner party? This assumes that the person was invited. |

I must admit, I went through a stage myself where I would get lots of those formal long sleeve shirts and wear them with a tie, but only to look important and 'businessy' , also had to wear them at work which was a literal pain in the neck, but all of a sudden we were told that we didn't have to wear them anymore. Given the choice, ALL the staff dumped them. |

| 646726 | 2008-03-06 09:24:00 | I have to say, I wore a tie to work every day of the week at my previous job, and it wasn't an issue at all. If anything, I'd feel like something was 'missing' if I didn't have a tie around my neck... I agree, somehow it was "Proper". I also felt it showed respect for people that I had to meet during a working day. A comment.. Look at some of the dress & nondress styles you see around town. The people who are wearing what. Who would YOU want working at the desk next to yours?? PJ |

| 646727 | 2008-03-06 09:54:00 | Nigel: it is quite simple, really, but when you tie a knot, don't tie it in such a way so that it makes a small skinny knot . Do it properly so that you have a knot that looks good . Use the following instructions for the "Duke of Windsor Knot . " Large over small . Up through hole under neck . Under small one - left to right . Over top behind knot . Come out on left . Across small one . Up under and over then down through knot . But I must agree that it is rather silly . What I fail to understand, though, is why, if you have to wear a tie, many people don't use a tie tack or a tie slide to stop it flapping all over the place? I don't enjoy my tie ending up in my coffee (or someone elses!) I also agree that it is some form of discrimination . Women have been able to wear what they like for some time . Why not men? Try an open neck shirt in the style of Brad Pit . Or perhaps have a sex change then you will be able to wear what you want! And I am still of the belief that women do not so much dress to attract or look good for the men, they want to look better than the other women - they dress for other women . Never understand why you want to wear all the good looking gear to work . Nothing wrong with t-shirt and jeans . Where the discrimination really shows itself is at a very formal do when the men dress in the same boring dinner jackets and the women dress with style . If I had to dress like that I would not wear a white shirt, but blue or pink with ruffles . Anything to look a bit different . And when you speak of the women wearing anything, why is it that these days the requirement seems to be to expose as many acres of bosom as is possible? Many seem to stop just above the nipple . Presented with such a large expanse of flesh, is it any wonder that women complain that you are not looking them in the eye when you talk to them? It is so distracting!:o "Flaunting" is the word that springs to mind . My wife does not have the acreage to achieve that look, but even if she did, I would not allow her to dress that way . :illogical Wow, Roscoe, who was it that called you staid ??? Misty  |

| 646730 | 2008-03-06 12:28:00 | And Roscoe - if I read what you said correctly - you presume to instruct your spouse on what is right for her to wear - that is either mischievous stirring (and so to be encouraged,) or plain - - - - ? Which is deficient between the two of you, and in what? I probably read it wrong. |

| 646731 | 2008-03-06 21:08:00 | Would you like a Gang member in full patches or a Nudist arriving at your place whilst you were hosting a small dinner party? Fashion is conformity in fancy dress . Might as well all be in uniform . I couldn't care less if someone turned up naked or in a patch - so long as I had invited them . They could even wear silly bits of cloth round their necks if they insist . |

| 646732 | 2008-03-06 23:32:00 | Wow, Roscoe, who was it that called you staid ??? Misty  Staid? Misty, I don't mind what I'm called as long as I'm not called late for dinner. For the few times I wear a tie I also use cuff links and a tie clip. Agree! People who wear ties without, at least, a tie clip or tack, look silly with their tie flopping everywhere. And, of course, to finish it off, cuff links. |
