646340 2008-03-05 10:29:00 As I do not live in America in any State I fail to see how I could make an informed decision

The American system of electing people is entirely different to New Zealand.

I am not particurlarly clued up as to whether I would be a Republican or a Democrat if I lived there. I have not done the research as I can not affect the end result.

On the other hand I can and do research for the New Zealand election which does happen this year as well.

The American election results could or will have effects in this country and worldwide depending on whom is President of the US after the election.

The serenity prayer follows:-
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can,

And the wisdom to know the difference.

646341 2008-03-05 12:27:00 I'm only going by what Hillary Clinton said . Do you know more than what she dose about American Politics .
:)

well of course SHE would say she's going to win:lol:

it's really sad that race/sex will affect people's vote

i say obama, largely due to the recent actions of clinton blaming (firing) her campaign manager, accusing the debate organisers of being unfair towards her, accusing the media of giving obama a big push, and her recent attacks on obama . lately she's been getting on my nerves . .

of course i wouldn't have a clue about their policies, but from the interviews i see i find obama to be a more genuine, agreeable, reasonable, and calmer person . they both seem pretty smart . . . .

sad thing is, i probably know more about the american elections that the NZ ones:2cents:

646343 2008-03-05 18:23:00 I found this comment on Digg.com
....and unfortunately I do think it could be true.

"The Democratic primaries might drag on longer now, but as soon as they're wrapped up, if Hillary wins I don't need to pay attention anymore, because the general election is already over with, all hail President McCain."

I saw Hillary a few days ago on Letterman, and I must admit she came through better than I expected. She smiled and relaxed - no doubt her campaign people told her that her uptight stressed bitchy personality will lose her the primaries.

As I have always said, I will not be too upset if Hillary is President. She is intelligent, and not a neocon!

But the problem is - so many Americans HATE her. If Obama loses, the conservatives will be out in droves to vote for McCain and once again the American voters will prove they are indeed stupid enough to put the Republicans back in the White House.

But then I also found this comment on Digg:

"The media is calling Hillary the winner in Texas, when in fact she is only the winner in the texas primary. When the texas caucus has been fully counted, in fact Obama will be the likely winner."

Gobama!! Yes, I'd vote for Obama.

It's quite simple really, if you vote National (Lego Man Key) then you would vote McCain in America, if you vote Labour (Auntie Helen) then you would vote Obama or Clinton.

ie National = Republican = Businessmens party

Labour = Democrat = Businessmens party disguised as peoples party

yes and no

the states is a very different place to NZ

sure national is similar to republican, but it isn't when you actually look at the attitudes/policies. it's just an equivalent image. same for labour/democrat

they aren't the same, and nor are our societes

i think the american people would best benefit from a democrat party, while NZ would be better with national. we both seem to be too far towards two (of many) different extremes

but that's just my opinion:2cents:

Doesn't really work, because either party in America is far, far left of either party in NZ (or so I have been told by people much more knowledgable than I am).

It would be:

US Dems ---- US Repub. ----------------- Labour ---- National

If I'm not mistaken

646347 2008-03-06 11:35:00 left or right?

i get sick of the same old false dictomy about left or right, democrat or republican, labour or national, holden or ford

there are other options, and politics is not a two way (or one-dimensional) system.

646348 2008-03-06 12:22:00 NZ is doing it's best to be just like a little America, slavishly copying neo-con economic ideas for the last 20 years.

NZ is extremely right wing these days verging on fascist in some sectors (mr plod) with vestiges of a Socialist past which will probably completely disappear upon the advent of the next National government, may that day never come.

The only thing that will stop that happening is a big economic collapse which may be on the way.

Did I see on the news tonight that the "surplus" is not what was expected having been somehow diminished by the stock market crisis in America. So they have been investing in the markets, gambling with the citizens of NZ's money I think.

I am amazed by the number of people I meet who say they will be voting National, these are people at the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum and the deluded fools somehow think that the National Party will be better for them than Labour, just how stupid and ignorant can people be. Reminds me of when I was working in a semi-sweat shop factory and the shop floor workers voted against having a Union. I walked out the next day, lost $600 in pay for not giving notice.

The NZ state education system is doing a good job of perpetuating the status quo (I suppose that's what the "State" means really), I mean people who must be quite well educated don't even seem to know what Right Wing and Left Wing mean, see this thread above, I think I'll go out and jump off a cliff. (joking, in case you don't realize).
