648721 2008-03-12 00:43:00 New Zealand BB is rubbish compared to some countries - just had a client come back from a business trip to china, their BB is FAST according to him - This is what he told me last night ----

Sent a few pictures (60 odd) back to his email in NZ he didn't have a laptop so he went into some place like a shop that has the facility - he said to the guy at the place he'll come back later to collect his drive as being that many it may take a while - The shop guy laughed so he said, - within 15 seconds he had sent all pics

648725 2008-03-12 03:05:00 Yea I have said on here before about my cousin's internet connection in Hamburg, Germany.
About two years ago while we were there they had just got a new connection, ADSL2+ 16MB down 4MB up (I think).
The bledisloe cup was on at the time so we didn't get to see it so I downloaded one of the games via AussieTorrents.
It was a 900MB file and there were only about a dozen seeders and it came down in about 17 minutes!

Well the government haven't done any investment in setting up a proper broadband infrastructure in NZ. They have been in since the start of the century, but no progress has been made.
They expect private companies to do all the investment for this, but we just don't have the population or government incentives to make it attractive for investors. Also our government can make up their own rules on private/ publicly list companies companies (eg. Auckland Airport and Telecom), to control competition and NZ ownership, which makes NZ a very unattractive place to invest in for overseas companies.
All they have done really with unbundling, is make it easier for international companies to come into NZ and get a piece of the ADSL broadband market, yet Mum and dad investors who make up a large ownership of telecom, have had millions wiped off their shares value.

Anyone know where that sort of money would come from?

Only one place, our Tax dollars. The government should have begun investing at the turn of the century. We are already years and years behind. Very similar situation to the cook strait electricity cable, where the government hasn't invested back into the electricity network, and we are now facing a potentially dangerous situation for those people who live in the hutt valley if Haywards blows. Who actually makes these decisions?
