New Zealand will this week take part in an international cyber-terrorism exercise co-ordinated by the US Department of Homeland Security. Cyber Storm II will simulate a terrorist attack via the internet on strategic infrastructure networks such as power grids and telecom systems in the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The New Zealand host for the exercise, which begins tomorrow and runs for the week, is the Government Communications Security Bureau, which intercepts overseas electronic communications and is responsible for ensuring the security of government information. Cyber Storm II will simulate an attack "by some organisation or state that has it in mind to take down the technology infrastructure of a country", GCSB director Bruce Ferguson said. Luckily for us all, the Telecom help desk will shortly no longer reside in NZ, so hopefully any would-be terrorists attempting to target NZ will end up many kilometres away.:thumbs: |
