Your words : "the English have always won in the end". Really? Losing colonies is winning? Please explain. Colonies are going to get independance eventualy so its hardly losing a war when they do. The frogs were beaten in the end so just consider 100 yrs war a continuation of Anglo Franco wars which the English won in the end France coming in second. You can never beat the English they are like the Energizer bunny it never gives up. They are unbeatable in a war end of story. Wikipedia is not always right I can go in in edit so France wins 100 yr war which they didnt they lost. |

| 648244 | 2008-03-12 06:56:00 | Colonies are going to get independance eventualy so its hardly losing a war when they do. So now the terms of reference is 'losing a war' when your words were : "the English have always won in the end". If a former English colony eventually gains its independence, then what has happened at the end? Would you say the English (in your own words) 'won'? I suppose you are trying to claim it wasn't a 'war' - what then is your definition of a 'war'? History Question #1 : how would you describe invading a country and then retreating after a series of defeats? Isn't that what happened in the 100 years war? Maybe you think it was a 'winning' withdrawal (sounds like Orwellian double-speak to me) - perhaps you could enlighten us? Or maybe, in your infinite wisdom, you would like to re-write history for us? Beeswax is always looking for more Wiki contributors - go for it! Question #2 : what was America before the war of Independence? Does the word 'colony' ring any bells? Why then do you choose to include losing this former colony and not the others? Is that not a case of a selective application of history? What then, in your definition, is 'losing a war'? And exactly which wars are you choosing to ignore / include? If you are merely including WW1 and WW2 then you definitely need to brush up on your history! Actually, I'd like to see you take your viewpoints to an ancient wargaming forum and see how far that gets you! Or maybe I can do it for you..... Question # 3 : in your own words "The Normans became English" - so who exactly did the Normans fight, and who won? Were the English ruling classes of the day overthrown? In your words, was that 'winning' for the losers too? Or are the habitants of Normandy, in your view of the world, 'English'? [Edit : methinks why did I bother with this troll? Oh well.....] |

| 648246 | 2008-03-12 07:25:00 | I too am lucky to be here today! Yes, both we can be really glad, that we got the chance to exist! Ironically: if my father wouldn't have been a refugee, I wouldn't exist either. In that case he surely would never have met my mother. What shows, that in each crisis we can already find the seed of hope. What you tell, makes me feel sad and helpless. The generation of my grandparents was responsible for what happened and our generation can't change history in which way we would ever like to. We only have to make a decision, how to live with our heritage. When I was about 15yo, at school in german lessons we read the book "When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit" by Judith Kerr. Our teacher, a wise lady indeed, then on one occasion said: "You are not responsible for what did happen, but you are responsible that similar crimes don't happen again during your lifetime!" So far my generation, concerning germany, has succeeded, the western part earlier than the eastern, of course. Even the reunion in 1990 didn't wipe out democracy here. Next year it will have last for 60 years in western and for 20 years in whole germany then. I feel very much relieve about that. But when I read, that since 1990 less and less people take part in the elections (just 50-60% sometimes), on the other hand I get more and more worried. Democracy can never be taken for granted. It's something mankind will always have do struggle for... |
