| 648230 | 2008-03-11 20:15:00 | I wonder how that will go down in Germany and I wonder how they will do the various accents? If they use german speakers for the british actors (what is the english term for that? to synchronize?), it usually don't work. Moreover: the musical "My Fair Lady" is originally played with London accent. The german version - although acting in London, too - uses the slang spoken in Berlin, the austrian version those of Vienna. If they use subtitles like with "Black Adder", it will. :) |

| 648233 | 2008-03-11 20:29:00 | Btw.: my father is from Memel (nowadays Klaipéda, Lithuania); in the summer of 1944 at the age of four he, my grandmother and other mostly female members of my family left the town, about 6 month before what was explained in post #1. Otherwise I probably wouldn't be here to write these words. :) My father was from Byellarussia (now Belarus), a part of Russia that, like Belgium, has been continuously overrun by the armies of the East and the West. A lot of Byellarussians actually fought for the Germans despite receiving some terrible attrocities at their hands. But many of them hated Stalin more than Hitler and many just wanted to survive the German attrocities. My father's entire family were killed by one side or another, and he himself was put in a German "work" camp as a teenager from which he fortunately survived. He managed to evade the soviet retribution squads and get on a refugee ship to New Zealand. I too am lucky to be here today! |

Hey Greg, the missus's family originated from Belarus also. Some immigrated to England in the early 20th Century but then some went back, so one half was in the UK, one half back in the old country. That half didn't survive the war. |

We've had a couple of coincidences eh Bruce. When I was seven after my dad died my mum took us to Belarus where we visited the village my dad was born. Didn't have much impact on me at the time of course, but the memories of the visit and seeing mum's cine films is quite emotional. Your missus and I could even be distant cousins! lol |

| 648236 | 2008-03-11 20:52:00 | My wife's done a bit of research on her family. The Belarus side of the family is a black hole. No apparent records. No trace. The Nazis came through and wiped them away as if they never existed. | Biggles (121) | ||
| 648237 | 2008-03-11 20:55:00 | Yeah I know what you mean. My missus (ex) has also done some research on my dad's background - it's really empty. Can you PM me your missus' surname, or what the family's name was back then? |

| 648238 | 2008-03-11 22:33:00 | Not so. Try : ~ the battle of Hastings in 1066 ~ the hundred years war with the French : the turning point was a defeat at Orleans in 1429 (Jeanne D'Arc anyone?) culminating in defeat at Bordeaux in 1453 ~ the loss of India in 1949 ~ the loss of Ireland ~ the loss of Egypt ~ the loss of South Africa...and so on for the rest of their former colonies the English never having lost a war (other than the Amercian War of Independence) is a myth.... XRNZA :) What tripe except for the American revolutionary wars only a dipstick would consider countries getting independance in 20 century a war the English loss. It was going to happen anyway. The Americans were just pushy buggers and wanted independance early on. The Normans became English, batlle of Hastings hardly a war English won 100 years war France always comes second in a war ask the Viet Minh lol. India became independant 1947 Egypt became independant Southern Ireland became independant South Africa was colony/dominion like us Boers came second in Boer war |
