647060 2008-03-09 01:23:00 The only possible reason I can see for all the OEMs bundling Norton is they get kickbacks, but can anyone prove it?

Why else would they make all the slow new PCs with vista & 512mb RAM unusable by installing Norton on them? Their customers would be less pissed off if they got a decent anti-virus program.

In saying that though, Norton has been quite a money spinner for my work - almost every computer we get in with Norton on it gets a 1 or 2 year subscription to NOD32 and/or more RAM (Some people refuse to believe that Norton is not a good product)

Its not kickbacks but a legal contract between the OEM's and Norton. Norton has to pay a fee to be installed on every computer in the hope that once the free period ends, the gullible customer will pay full price to renew their subscriptions.

647061 2008-03-09 01:30:00 but why did the chain stores use it as the standard bundled antivirus?

They don't. They're probably barely aware of its exitence. The likes of Compaq, Dell etc bundle it.
