648317 2008-03-10 22:34:00 In the 1950s in the army I was stationed in Vienna. Our mess supplies were always checked on receipt. The beer bottles all had the date they were brewed clearly shown. If the beer was more than a few days or so old it was rejected. I don't know what it was like after a week - it didn't last that long.
But I always thought dating beer was a good idea. Too often I have found many people think it improves with age. It doesn't. Don't drink it much these days. Sad.

648319 2008-03-10 23:38:00 Ken, I remember the Lucky saga. It cost a huge amount for permission to use the name, which I think was owned by a brewery in Hawaii. Lucky was going to take the NZ market by storm and be the best seller in no time at all. Unfortunately it headed quickly South and was pulled after only a few months. I wonder who the marketing whiz of the day was who came up with this one. Must do some research.
You would also remember when Steinlager was called Steinecker, but was changed when Heineken got stroppy. What is now the London Bar at the Civic Hotel is presumably what was the old Steinecker Bar. (hic)

648320 2008-03-11 00:35:00 We opened some Speights here a few weeks ago that had been left by my brother about 3 years ago, it was terrible.

Our NZ beers are all just average, nothing great about any of them. Worst I have had is in India.

Best was two brewery tours in one day, Tuborg and Carlsberg. Also toured Heineken factory about 20+ times.

My favourite is Carlsberg and what I normally buy.

Heineken is great in Amsterdam, but the "under license" stuff you get here is crap in comparison.

On my bus tours I used to buy 100 Dozen in Spain to last for about 2 weeks and get us through Morocco and Portugal when touring there.

A Russia Scandi trip (6weeks) we had 100 dozen of Elephant Beer, very strong beer. Lasted 8 days between 23 of us.

There are some very nice beers around the world but NZ ones are not among the good ones in my opinion.

648321 2008-03-11 00:39:00 Going back to Billy’s question, I have been assured that Beer is best new, unlike Wine. But, if you have an old brew, pour it into a clear glass. If there’s nothing floating around, sniff it, if that seems ok, taste it, if that is OK, drink and enjoy it.

The clarity is usually the dead give away. ;)

This was a hypothetical question of course, I wouldn't drink it either, but being pasteurised and hermetically sealed in a can (unlike bottles or flagons which let air in over time) I figured it probably was quite OK. You wouldn't be worried about eating canned food that old provided it had been stored in a clean, dry and cool place, as was this beer.

Before I tip it out and recycle the cans, I'll pour a little into a glass and give it the smell 'n taste test and report ba........

Cheers

I'd rather sample 10 year old DB than drink Lion Red! :yuck:

648322 2008-03-11 00:46:00 A crate of flagons in the boot .
Open them all and fit a lid with a hose in to each (lids also had small venting holes), which all joined together and fed up to the front of the car .
Behind the dashboard was an electric fuel pump and on the dash was a button and a small pipe coming out .

Put your glass under and press the button and it saves having to stop .

A friend had this setup in the 60's in his old Vauxhall .

648323 2008-03-11 01:09:00 . . . Heineken is great in Amsterdam, but the "under license" stuff you get here is crap in comparison . . . . Have to agree whole-heartedly with this .

Same with Stella Artois and Tuborg, which used to be personal favourites . What also bugs me is, even though it's brewed locally, they still charge a premium price for it, despite the fact it doesn't taste anything like the original product . [Hope someone from each of those respective breweries reads this post and pulls their license to brew!! ]

Well said johcar . I used to drink Heineken, but had to give up when it started to taste like bubble gum (like all NZ beers) . Changed to Stella and enjoyed that for a while, before they got their hands on that and ruined it . I now alternate between Becks and Grolsch - hoping and praying that they continue to be imported and not brewed locally . :yuck:

Interestingly, those two beers you mention are one I also prefer - while they are not brewed here .

But I would also recommend Budějovický Budvar as a similarly-priced quality beer . It's the original recipe for Budweiser from České Budějovice in south-western Czech Republic, before the Yanks stole it, renamed it and transmogrified it into the archetypical American flavoured water that we all know today . . . .

I was a Heine fan when it was brewed in Holland. The DB brewed stuff not quite as good. Bintang which is Indonesian piss is a Heine clone and its good as a clog brewed Heine grenade. the worst piss I have tasted is fron Skri Lanka called 3 coins it tasted like a bad homebrew. The fantastic thing about this thread is its male only bastion. No chick would dare offer an opinion about beer its a male thing.
