647050 2008-03-08 07:44:00 How did Norton get so popular to begin with then, ie: just after it was written, sorry - forged in the fires of Mt. Doom....?

(I see we have new emoticons - how about adding the ability to strikethrough text as well?)

647051 2008-03-08 08:13:00 I use Norton's, have done for many many years. Have had no problems running it, no problems with computer slowdown, and no virus that I haven't allowed in for whatever reason...

and my computer is running pretty much 24/7, always connected etc. etc.

I have and still do recommend Norton's to people looking at antivirus software. IMHO it is one of the best on the market. That doesn't mean it'll block everything from every stupid site people go to on the web, but a lot of the stuff from those sites don't quite fit in the virus category.

We can only hope they get a second opinion.

647053 2008-03-08 08:44:00 I often think that the people using Norton's are probably the sort of people who should have it, but that does seem a bit cruel. ;) R2x1 (4628)

Simple. The sheep who buy PCs from chain stores get it bundled with the PC and never bother finding out if they should change.

what a sucker......how would you even know you've got a nasty ?

Ive had several situations where the owner had the latest/greatest/up-to-date version of norton and yet it was saying 'no virus' when it was patently obvious that the sysetm was infected.......and indeed when scanned with a different a/v proved to be infected.......

if you offered me a free copy of any norton a/v and offered to PAY me $100 to install it on my home machine i'd decline !

That makes sense, but why did the chain stores use it as the standard bundled antivirus? Symantec paid them to do it? they thought it was good? there was nothing else? No other AV maker wanted their product associated with crap PCs?

I'll Second, third and forth those comments, I see it all the time as well in customers PC's.

Those Screen shots & results that wratterus put up couldn't be more proof - Norton Says its fine yet it OBVIOUSLY isn't.
Well Nod32 found and removed I think it was 35 threats, Spybot got rid of another 40, and I ran smitfraud fix over it too to get rid of anything else

Heres a question and no one can honestly say wheres the proof - Why then if Nortons Is so good why does other software easily find and remove infections it misses ?

Thousands of people all over the world say the same thing - Nortons is missing LOTS.

From My own personal experience I used to have Nortons years ago - it did a scan on Friday night said the PC was clean, after it finished scanning I turned off the PC, the following morning Norton corruped its self on start up. I removed Norton and installed Nod32 INSTANTLY even before updating Nod found 6 infections on startup.

I wish I had $150.00 + for every PC I removed Nortons from Because it is hopeless, and misses bugs & I have to clean the system - Hold on I DO! ;)

647059 2008-03-08 22:41:00 The only possible reason I can see for all the OEMs bundling Norton is they get kickbacks, but can anyone prove it?

Why else would they make all the slow new PCs with vista & 512mb RAM unusable by installing Norton on them? Their customers would be less pissed off if they got a decent anti-virus program.

In saying that though, Norton has been quite a money spinner for my work - almost every computer we get in with Norton on it gets a 1 or 2 year subscription to NOD32 and/or more RAM (Some people refuse to believe that Norton is not a good product)
