648968 2008-03-13 06:26:00 i dont like the new operation of the orcon website i cant get around and find the info i want. And the ADSL2 prices are high, infact there prices are just plain high. I prefer there old plans and website. Go telstraclear they have actually made an effort to 'go their own way' with the cable Enet and its not in Auckland!!!! I hate how auckland gets everything.

Just my 3 cents,

648969 2008-03-13 08:28:00 I was looking at orcons pricing plans and they seem to have changed them again today, and they don't look very attractive anymore.

Agreed. I'm an Orcon customer and the announcement of the unbundled plans excited me initially. But after having read about the new unbundled plans and their costs I'm not convinced. Currently I pay $40/month for maximum download speed and 15GB download cap. The most similar new plan available to me costs $109 and has only a 10GB download cap. So I would get up to 12x faster download speed but 5GB less on download for almost 3x what I currently pay. What a rip. It's a moot point for me anyway, I'm 2 streets outside the ASDL2+ zone.

As they are the only ADSL 2 provider at the moment, they have a monopoly, so can charge what they want. Until there are more unbundled providers, their prices are going to remain high. As they are government owned, they have a lot of money to invest. I think the government have got a conflict of interest in forcing telecom to unbundle, and then setup their own company that take financial advantage of it. Also whoever said that unbundling was going to mean cheaper broadband. They said that about the electricity market, before Max Bradford sold it off. Becuase telecom have to split up, it will mean more costs for them, which they then have to pass on to their customers.

648975 2008-03-13 10:54:00 Don't you get a free phone line and free national calls with their $100 plan ? So you can ditch your telecom phone line saying you $40 odd. Digby (677)
648976 2008-03-13 12:16:00 I couldnt care less for faster plans.. Heck, even 2mbps is plenty fast and ultimately useless because we have such disgustingly small data caps! I can download 20GB in a couple of days without breaking a sweat on my existing plan with Ihug, so faster + less data allowance = capped sooner! :(

Pointless at the moment IMO

Agree with that comment.
It amuses me why people like Misty get so excited about ADSL2 and faster speeds and I wonder how exactly they think it is going to make such a big difference to their life. What is it that they will be able to do that they can't do now.
There is a huge expense for ISPs to install their own equipment and they have to buy additional bandwidth because people will download more just because they can, so it should be no surprise that it will cost more.
