647211 2008-03-08 04:53:00 depends on where you live, if you live in a flat suburban paved area,: BMX

hilly off road out of town farm, mountain bike

boy who is 5-9 years old. small bmx
boy who is 9-18 mountain bike or bmx depending on where you live, the terrain wise

girl 5-9 small bmx
girl 9-18, usally prefer a mountain bike but maybie bmx.

it also depends on the distances you'd expect your kids to go,

long rides, mountain bike

short sprints around, or tricks, bmx

hope this helped

647212 2008-03-08 05:35:00 It rather depends Beetle.

This is a subject I used to know about but have not caught up with.

The first bike I had weighed rather a lot and I was still able to cycle from Wanganui East to a wharf and catch spotties. I was careless enough at one time to leave the bike on the wharf and a truck backed over it.

Later when I moved to Wellington I bought my own racing bike with 5 speed gears and joined the local racing club. Now of course there are specialised cycles. Gear ratios are important but if you go track you used to have to have a fixed wheel and therefore there is only one gear. Mountain biking is a different issue.

What do the children want to do with a cycle? You do not need light frames and 21 gears etc all the time.

I have competed in Palmerston North to Wellington and also used to ride my bike from Wellington to Wanganui and back.

647213 2008-03-08 05:41:00 If the bike is too heavy though it does make it hard work and then they won't ride them anyway, do whatever it takes to make riding fun otherwise they will become car bound 15 year olds. I still ride today because we could and did beg, borrow parts to make any bike we fancied to do specific things which made the experience fun. gary67 (56)
647214 2008-03-08 05:44:00 Just by what suits your budget and the kids taste.

A motivated child can kill a $600 bike just as easily as they can kill a $300 bike, and they have zero concept of how much effort goes into money....

Haven't seen a Shimano bike - I thought they just did componentry???

Here when a set of parts/components is over 50% of a common manufacturer's name, it generally gets called by that name.
