792654 2009-07-18 04:24:00 I'm thinking of the case itself :)

Edit: Does a MATX case take a standard size PSU?

792655 2009-07-18 04:25:00 You could just use an MATX mobo in an ATX case.. Blam (54)

Haha, I could, but wouldn't that defeat the purpose of a small mobo? ;)

792657 2009-07-18 04:55:00 OK, now considering a MATX case, seen as they take a standard size PSU (correct me if I'm wrong) and I can put hard drives in the 3.5" bays that face outwards.

Case: ascent.co.nz
Mobo: ascent.co.nz (the price seems to be very low to me! But it has the 3 year warranty)

What do you guys think of those parts??

No. The reason I recommend MATX over ATX is because it is cheaper!

Gigabyte case is good. I have the M3 myself and its pretty good, little noisy, so I replaced the fans.

Mobo is fine, keep in mind it has a limit of 4gb Memory.

792659 2009-07-18 06:21:00 That size case / Motherboard combo is what I put in the last WHS I built.

The Motherboard shown is close to the same ones I used previously - main difference is the audio Outputs.

The cases I normally use are the Cool Master 332 (www.imagef1.net.nz) or 340 (www.imagef1.net.nz) ( micro Case). Mainly because the air flow is good, and they come with standard 120MM rear fan -- you can hardly hear them when running. The case fan is practically silent ( even with the side off the case) - any noise is from the CPU fan

Cant remember how many drives the 340 Takes, but the 332 has slots for 5 but can expand out to more if you want.

I dont use the PSU's that you can get with the cases, I order cases without PSU's from my supplier, and install either Antec or Corsair.

You wont need 4 GB of RAM -- As Blam pointed out before thats an over kill in specs.

792660 2009-07-18 20:33:00 my fileserver is an old 1.6ghz sktA sempron
1.25GB running server2003, will be 256MB when i move to FreeNAS
a 4port Sata PCI card
a GbE PCI card
and several harddrives, 1.5, 750, 500, 250, planning on getting another 1.5TB.
400W psu.

4GB of ram would be excessive overkill.

for a simple fileserver it works nicely. i also download my torrents on it using utorrent 1.9
