793282 2009-07-20 05:23:00 I didnt realise how easy it was to get completely hog tied by Vista's network security and now need help to untangle myself!!
I have a PC (Vista Ultimate) and Laptop (Vista Business) on a LAN at home where both PC's used to talk to each other with no problems. I have just reformatted the Laptop HDD & reloaded Vista Business, - now nobody talks to each other anymore. The network is fine, seeing is no problem, - accessing is.
The PC has: 3 internal HDD (C: (operating System), D: (data); F: (backup); & G: (a partition of C: - Archives). D:, F:, G: are all shared with permissions to everybody. In addition I have 2 external HDD's attached to the PC by USB (Movies and Pictures), shared with permissions to everybody.
The Laptop has: 1 HDD partitioned into C: (operating system) and D: (data), D: is shared with permissions to everybody.

I cant work out if its the security settings on each drive, share permissions or something else which prevents them being read. Some files on some drives I can open & write between drives but cant save, some drives I cant access at all. Tells me to get the Administrator, - I am the Administrator!!

I only need a basic setup so PC's can access, read, write between each other without any issues, - cant think why I would need security at all as I'm the only person using the system.

What is the simplest way of removing all access limitations on the network? Do settings under disk properties > security need adjustment? Under sharing I have tried giving permission to "everybody" on both PC's but thats not enough to access from other PC?
Could someone please untangle my mess, - thanks!!

793283 2009-07-20 05:40:00 All I did was turn network discovery on (In network and sharing center). File sharing on, enable public file sharing on (select 2nd option), disable password protected sharing. Put it as private. Created a folder then shared it, thats it.

This is Vista Ult. The other PC's are XP.

793284 2009-07-20 06:08:00 Done all that though I tend to share specific folders on the drive rather than set up one folder and move everything in and out.
What were your disk security settings? How do they impact on the network? Compared to sharing permissions?

793285 2009-07-20 06:16:00 I dont share the whole hdd on any of these. I dont touch the disk properties / security tab. It has nothing to do with it. I didnt change anything else, but create and share A folder on all 3 of these

I create a shortcut on each of these (to the shared folder I created). When I want to copy something, I select the file/s / right mouse / send to, then select the folder. Thats it. Its copied across the network

I dont have permissions on any of these either. No password required on any of them to copy to each other.

793286 2009-07-20 06:28:00 Hey thanks for your help/advice. I think we have slightly different situations in that I am sharing the whole drive, - hence I wonder if the drive's security settings play a role in my problems.
I also suspect (but dont know) that if you have different user names ??? on each PC another problem is created. I might try changing the computer names so they're both the same and see what happens.........might remove some hurdles.....!!

793287 2009-07-20 06:35:00 I don't think that you can have 2 pcs with the same name on the same network. Give it a go anyways. ronyville (10611)
793288 2009-07-20 07:10:00 Unshare all the drives, and follow these steps:

Right Click drive>properties>sharing tab>advanced sharing>Tick "SHare this folder">Permissions>TIck full control>OK

Do this for all PCs.

BTW it isn't a good idea to share the root of a drive to all users over a network!

793289 2009-07-20 07:12:00 I wouldnt share the whole hdd. If it gets infected youre in trouble. If its shared Speedy Gonzales (78)
793290 2009-07-20 07:35:00 Follow that okay, - thanks. Under Share permissions I have only one "Group or Username" - Everybody. Is that the right setting to use or should I be using "administrator" or one of the othgers which can be selectd?
Should I have the same selection on all drives?
Thanks for your help.

793291 2009-07-20 07:36:00 Set it as everybody with full control.

Make sure they're on the same workgroup.
