1441711 2017-11-07 16:34:00 I just started running what I have found to be a very stable (few, if any crashes) version of Linux distributions (called: "distro") in Linux Ubuntu .

I ran Linux Puppy for a bit . . . and actually keep it loaded on the same computer as Ubuntu . Puppy was fun although really limited in scope with NO eye candy . . . and even though it could not find any of my sound cards with two hands, a map and a flashlight (NZ = torch) . . . . and therefor was utterly silent^ . . . it is very fast and directly to the point when it runs .
(* well, it made some rude noises . . . but they don't count)

As a platform for using Google or Chrome browsers . . . Puppy flashed with dazzling speed, unlike any bloated Windows opsys .

As fast as it is . . . . in respect of its simplicity . . . . it makes one hunger for a prettier system . Actually, Puppy is a great teething biscuit (NZ = Bickiepeg) for a n00b to try as it's demands are simple as is it's graphical user's interface (gui) . Perhaps in lieu of sound, it could use sign language .

So now I'm off slaying bigger dragons . . . . . Linux Lizards . . . . . if you will .

Distros I tried and actually dislike for various reasons:

Open SUSE - you've got to be a code kiddie to like . . . . . let alone even USE this distro .

Red hat - again . . . leave this one to the pros .

Cinnamon - had trouble with my sound card .

Ĺubuntu - again, sound card problems and stupidly ugly desktop .

Distros I like - but not at the moment:

Knoppux - too many penguins! OK . . . that's a cheap shot . I just didn't feel all warm and fuzzy using it . That's fair . . . . right! After all, this is MY post and I can say what I want to say .

Zorin - I actually had a toss up of this or Cinnamon, but Zorin is something I'm going to run again, you betcha! Besided, the desktop is fantastic! I've got to find a newer update for it first . Seems mine is pre-deluvian .

Linux Mint - I'll be checking this out some more when I've got a few more miles on the L-distro I'm running right now . I think this distro isn't n00b-friendly . . . . . and it knows if you're a n00b or not . . . . punishing you if you are .

Chrome, the Distro - yup! This is the same opsys/distro that runs the Googe Chromebook . Gonna go there again for sure! I might be wrong here though if it only runs on a tablet or Eec-PC and doesn't like my playgrounds .

Arch Linux - ugly, ugly, ugly . . . but functional .

Distros for the Windoze Escapee:

Chalet- looks amazingly like Win7 . Sortta/mightta be a good one for the Windoze-to-Linux changling .

Ubuntu - a somewhat disturbing-looking desktop, but hit the Windows Key and up pops the very familiar menu from which you can launch programs like you did in any of the Win-derivatives from your yore .

BeeFree - really, really much akin to Win7 with its Start Menu . This might be #2 contender for expat-Windoze user, with Zorin being #1 . (I forgot to mention Zorin as a Windoze replacement, didnt I?)

Gecko - not for the uninitiated Linuxuser, but substantially it is every bit a nice looking and smooth operating distro IF you dont get a troublesome graphics card fatal glitch . You'll know right away if it won't work . . . . but if it does, be prepared to be amazed!

That's MY assessment so far . I mightta/could change what's left of my mind . . . . at any time or moment .

By the way a teething biscuit is generally called a rusk here.

1441713 2017-11-07 20:31:00 You may want to Add Fedora to your list, providing you have more than 2G of RAM as it's a little heavy on RAM usage compared to others. It looks very different thanks to Gnome 3 and it's got a great pedigree, essentially it's red hats testing ground. Worth a look I think and pretty functional out of the box, only trouble it gave me was figuring out how to install Chrome but it wasn't that difficult. It does come with Firefox by default. dugimodo (138)
1441714 2017-11-08 05:59:00 Just because I'm not sure . . . . why do some of us use Google and some of us use Chrome?

Maybe I forgotted . . . . . . . . I think I used to know .

And I can't add Fedora yet . . . . I've never had it loaded and running . . . . . . . . . . (sigh . . . . theres always one in the crowd)
