1441167 2017-10-26 09:57:00 Problem with SWMBO's desktop system.
Windows 10 pro x64
Was ok this morning.
Went to start it this afternoon & got greeted with

"The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded"

Then promps for password, there is none.

Tried the MS logon password but didn't like that.

Tried to get into safe mode but wouldn't go passed the welcom screen.

Tried system restore but the last update must have disabled that, not points set.

Just checked my gaming system & that had been dissabled as well.

Any ideas?

1441168 2017-10-26 13:52:00 Hmm very perculiar?

Try this which will get you into start-up repair mode...

At the login screen click the power icon (bottom right of the screen.)
Before selecting a shutdown option, hold down the shift key and click the restart option.
This "should" load advanced start-up.
Select Troubleshoot then select Advanced.
Under Advanced select Start-Up repair - this should scan PC and potentially fix any issues it finds.

Another option is to to try and boot into "Safe Mode with networking" and see if there are any outstanding Windows Update installations which need to be completed.

As for the same thing happening on both machines... are there any similarities between the 2 machines in terms of running the same software packages?
When I updated to the Fall Creators Update Windows disabled the HP 3D Drive Guard software on my laptop due to "incompatibility". Apart from that I had no other issues.

Skip the first bit, and go down to fixing the profile part.

1441171 2017-10-26 19:12:00 Can't do a lot if it won't start in safe mode.
I'm wondering if, the reason for that is causing the problem.

1441172 2017-10-26 21:59:00 Had another couple of attempts to access safe mode & are now getting a "Unknown Hard Error"
I'm assuming that to mean hard drive.
The hard drive also has Linux Mint duel booted.
Currently using that to write this, so that part is still working.
I've got another hard drive with win 10 installed so will swap that in.
Just need to save SWMBO's emails.
She's been away for a few days, gets back this afternoon.
Why couldn't it have crapped out while she was using it.

1441173 2017-10-26 22:04:00 See your other post (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz). It'll disable system restore, because of the new features. Speedy Gonzales (78)
1441174 2017-10-26 22:20:00 True but but MS should advise that after the update or most users won't be aware of it.

Getting back to my problem.
Is there any way I can I access win 10 from mint to save SWMBO's emails.
Otherwise I'll have to slave the hard drive to another system & try to access them that way.

1441175 2017-10-27 04:45:00 Mint should see the Windows files gary67 (56)
1441176 2017-10-27 04:56:00 Do you know if you set email up as IMAP or POP? If IMAP, you could just re-grab all the emails from the mail server but could take a while if there's an excessive amount.

What mail program is being used? Copying them without exporting them maybe possible but I'd see that as a security issue if it could be done like that.

Anyways an unknown hard error is usually a corrupt config, if you can mount the drive in write mode (can't mount if using fast boot) and rename them, they get recreated. Sadly I can't remember which files they are but they reside in a directory called config so hopefully someone else knows which ones.
