1440934 2017-10-20 03:16:00 I don't use IE, or hardly ever, but trying to open it the other day on my Win 8.1 computer, I get the error shown below. Googled lots of so-called solutions to this, but eventually found out via an IE repair utility that about 5 Registry entries were missing (but it didn't say what they were....big deal!)

I suspected Windows updates could be the reason, so carried out a repair install from original DVD, keeping all files and settings. However updates are lost.

Internet Explorer now works. So go to Windows Updates and a 'few hours' later and a zillion updates it is all done.

BUT...IE no longer works :badpc:

Maybe one out of those updates and it would have been most likely be an update(s) from within the last 6 months caused the problem, But how to find which ones, and would uninstalling them restore the Registry entries??

Is it really necessary to have all those updates, an awful lot of crap really :waughh:

Edit: forgot to say that the fault module was a dll but it was different each time IE was attempted to start

1440935 2017-10-20 23:51:00 Problem partially solved...by process of elimination.......the quality monthly roll up for August 2017 is ok in that IE now works, but the next 2 months quality roll up updates cause IE to stop working. Finding out which individual update is at fault is not so easy. Terry Porritt (14)
1440936 2017-10-21 20:47:00 A further update that may explain things: support.microsoft.com

quoting:

"Some users who have the text size for icons set to a larger size (using Display Settings in Control Panel) may have issues launching Internet Explorer.

Reducing the text size for icons to a smaller value or using the Change the size of all items setting should alleviate this issue.

Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release."

Whilst this may be the problem, Internet Explorer also didn't launch when the previous months rollup, KB 4038792 was installed.

1440938 2017-10-22 01:06:00 IE is crap - and you said you don't use it anyway... so why bother trying to "fix it?

Because there was/is always the possibility of an underlying problem that could cause more problems elsewhere. Not too bothered if IE fails to launch, but it's nice to know why.

1440939 2017-10-22 10:14:00 Did you install any addons / plugins for IE?

Or some program may have installed something that IE doesnt like. Or it maybe buggy. It may also be malware thats causing the prob. If ccleaner is installed, go to tools / browser plugins.

See if there are any odd entries here. If there is untick them. Close IE first. Then see if it runs / opens

Download / run adwcleaner. See if it picks any malware up

Thanks Speedy, I tried all the usual suspects including re-setting IE and so-called "uninstalling and re-installing" which basically just disables/enables without doing that much else :) I narrowed it down to windows updates by progressively installing them, and then finding the MS info for the roll up more or less confirmed it, as I do have icon fonts size larger than the microscopic 9 point default.

The acid test will when they say the next roll up has fixed the issue.

IE is so deeply embedded that a fault in there somewhere could well affect something else in some strange Microsoft way :)
