1440653 2017-10-11 02:16:00 I removed a HDD from a laptop which couldn't start Windows. I think Windows is badly corrupted.

I then plugged the HDD to another PC running Win10 so that I can retrieve some important documents.

But, Windows Explorer won't allow me to read the files in C:\Users\XXX .. no permission to access.

How to get access to that folder?

1440654 2017-10-11 02:50:00 Do you have a Linux on CD, that should access it.

Also you could try by googling and downloading "Takeownership", that might work. Others no doubt will follow me and have better suggestions too.

1440655 2017-10-11 03:02:00 Most of the time all you do is click on Continue and sit back watch the green sloooooow line along the top, usually at the end it opens and bingo - all the files.

Thats if its the same as the picture below.

paragon rescue CD is a great tool to get around persmissions etc
Download & make a bootable CD & its all menu driven, to copy files from one place to another
being linux based, its not fussy with permissions or even drives that Win wont read anymore

1440657 2017-10-11 03:39:00 This may or may not work.

Do you know the username and password of user on the windows corrupted drive?

If yes, then on the PC you are using to access the drive, just create the same username and use the same password. Log into that username and see if you are able to access the second drive that way.

1440658 2017-10-11 03:50:00 wainuitech, I got the same windows. but it seems take ages, no ending ....

Just to try my luck, I run Command Prompt with Admin and tried all the DOS commands (which I've forgotten) but finally managed to copy all my important files out!

Lucky me!

I did say it was Slooooow, but it usually finishes. all depends on the speed of the host PC as well as the amount of files on the slave drive. I actually use windows based /CD software that has a file explorer, no permissions to worry about, copy to another HDD.
