| 1439956 | 2017-09-28 21:35:00 | Hi Guys, a weird one thats got me stumped. I'd appreciate any ideas let me get this out there... - yes its XP - please dont say the obvious 'end of life ' blah blah. There can be reasons why some XP's simply cant be replaced (lack of money, no install disks/keys for required software ) Win runs fine , untill I run chkdsk /f (or /r) The chkdsk runs on reboot, but after it finishes, Win takes forever to load , in fact it can just sit there indefinitely try to load So I imaged it to a NEW HD(from old HD that wouldnt load win) . Win now loads & runs correctly. Run chkdsk /f on that NEW HD , same thing , chkdsk runs on start & then Win gets stuck trying to load up. Same with safe mode And as I was typing this, it just rebooted itself after trying to load in safe mode (that sounds like hardware) however, after unexpected reboot , I that put a 3rd HD in that has the image , imaged onto it. Same issue :Win starts up perfectly untill I chdsk it. Its Obviously pretty screwed up. Owner was complaining it started to take several attempts to get win loaded. I didnt see any issues(across 2 days) untill I ran chkdsk I did all the usual HD tests, malware scans etc. :badpc: |

| 1439957 | 2017-09-28 21:52:00 | Reason for running chkdsk? Anyways, common case for slowing it down after running the command is that bad sectors were found and it mapped them else where. Time to look for a new hard drive. |

Sometimes no matter how hard you try to repair the system you cant. A reinstall is the only way. Things like Licence keys (for XP ) easy enough to lift off, the other problem could be other software, some you cant get the keys for some you can - had to do that earlier this week, lift keys from Adobe and several other programs on an XP-- Finding the install media - that was another story ;). Suggestion: Try doing a repair install on one of the XP Images, that overwrites the OS but leaves all the programs /data- see if that repairs it, OR to double check throw on a fresh copy of XP, don't worry about keys, its only to track down the actual problem. |

| 1439959 | 2017-09-28 22:20:00 | Ran chkdsk as part of my testing , after I thought new HD was the fix (it wasnt a fix ) Same issue with a brand new HD (imaged off old HD) , and on a 3rd HD Zero bad sectors on original HD . Smart = OK. Chckdsk had finished & Win was starting to TRY & load Same thing if do /r or /f (ie dont do surface scan) The best option is a new PC, but thats just no go : owner simply cant afford it. |

Clean reinstall is also a no go , because they dont have install keys or disks for some very important software (you can probably guess why, usual reason) Install over the top often doesnt do the job when things are this bad, may be my last resort though . I made a working image , so I can play around with that I'll trying uninstalling AV, getting to the clutching at straws level now :) |

| 1439961 | 2017-09-28 23:10:00 | Its looking like it might be the AV :badpc: uninstall Avast , run chkdsk, Win will load OK (so far) . Previously running chkdsk would screw it up XP + Avast + chkdsk = win wont load . So Win either Win a bit screwed, or this Avast version is too buggy on XP |

Tried it, YEP - good. The majority of software i use as well all in one application. Now just have to try and add other apps as it says you can. Edited: just added a few more :) |
