1440766 2017-10-17 02:24:00 My very old AMD Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 ATX has come to an end. I am thinking of using its very nice case to carry out my first ever build. I am looking at the AMD Gigabyte GA-AB350 Gaming ATX board (PBTECH has it for $169). It runs the Ryzen series of CPU. Has anyone any idea if the board is a good one or is there something else I should look at? Bryan (147)

1440768 2017-10-17 02:37:00 No. I will need a suitable PSU, RAM and GPU. The board has an 8 pin ATX board connector instead of the usual 4 pin but I believe there are cables that act as a suitable connector. Bryan (147)
1440769 2017-10-17 02:53:00 To be honest you can't go far wrong these days. I would personally stick to either Gigabyte or Asus for the mainboard and graphics card. just get a board that has the specs you want. wratterus (105)

I've never had trouble with Gigabyte or Asus builds that I've done, I have one of each right now as it happens.

1440771 2017-10-17 06:07:00 The board I am looking at measures 30.5 x 24.4. The case I have is at least 11 years old. The new board measures 30.5 x 23.

I have seen a comment on the Internet that someone found that the attachment holes did not line up. If that is the case, can the misalignment be overcome or am I looking at a new case?

As a newbie to building, that is a conundrum to me, I have yet to strip down the old box to see for myself. I would probably need to take the case to the motherboard supplier to test it.

1440772 2017-10-17 06:38:00 If both boards are ATX they should comply with the same mounting standards regardless of age so your case should work. It's more common to have issues with no front USB 3.0 or the wrong PSU standard than physical problems with the case, unless it is a proprietary case with a non standard (not ATX) motherboard such as what HP/Compaq/Dell etc tend to make.

Looking at pictures of both boards online it looks like your old board has one extra mount point in the corner, if that's the case you may need to remove a standoff or otherwise make sure nothing is touching the board where there's no mounting hole. If it's dead you could take it out now and see if that's possible, good practice for installing a new one anyway.

I've built new PCs into old case plenty of times, generally it works. If not a new case is not necessarily too expensive. I'd say try it and see, just be careful and take your time fitting it and earth yourself frequently. Ignore anyone that says static precautions are a waste of time, better to take a precaution you don't need than to take the chance to fry a new motherboard.

1440773 2017-10-17 06:43:00 BTW you probably will want a new PSU if you go ahead. dugimodo (138)
1440774 2017-10-17 07:37:00 Thanks for the reassurance Dugi. I will get a new PSU, would 500W be good enough? Bryan (147)

Should be fine unless you're adding in many HDDs or a gaming quality GPU
