650133 2008-03-17 06:18:00 Hi SJ, feersumendjinn and Mechanics

I have another problem with my Mitsubishi Galant 1992.

My windscreen keeps fogging up, (not from getting it on in the car either) :p and my coolant reservoir empties real fast.
If I put the Aircon or heater it doesn't help the problem but seems to make it worse.

I have googled this and seem to come up with a possible cause - A hole in the heater core?
Except I can't find any signs of this leaking inside the car as they suggest.

Am I on the right track here? If so how much would this cost to fix? at a guess?

Thanks guys :thanks

650134 2008-03-17 07:56:00 If you don't intend using the heater, disconnect heater inlet & outlet hoses from the heater and join them together, under the bonnet. I would shudder at the cost of removing the heater core from the dashboard. Good luck.! BobM (1138)
650135 2008-03-17 07:57:00 Recently saw much the same problem with a Nissan Primera and it was found to be the car heater. As a short term solution the heater was cut out of the loop as there was a serious water loss. The first quote for a new heater and labour was about $2000-00 - yeah you read it right.

I have had a second quote at about $800. It is considered to be a major in this Nissan as most of the dash area needs to be removed to get at it....a rough estimate of about least 8 hours work was suggested.

It sounds as if you have the same problem.....if so shop around for a quote. In this case the car is still running without heater/demister while the owner, (my daughter) tries to find some money.

Good Luck....Bazza.

650136 2008-03-17 08:33:00 I've read about something like this in Popular Mechanics a few years back- check your heater system for pinhole leaks- the coolant is viscous until it is heated, and will pass through pinholes in the system.

When your windscreen heats up, was/is there ever a sickly smell? Or have you changed the coolant for just water?

650137 2008-03-17 08:44:00 Wow, I have the same problem with my 94 Honda Ascot. Only fogs up on cold/wet days though. qazwsxokmijn (102)
650138 2008-03-17 08:44:00 check if the floor under the carpet is wet.

one thing to watch some of the mitisi have an ECU just under the heater. so heater leaks and kills the ECU. not sure what models have that. however i wouldn't leave it for to long it might start to cost big.

650139 2008-03-18 03:23:00 You guys all got it covered..it is absolutely the heater core.....and as a retired wrench, I heartily recommend replacing it (grease my palm with mucho $$$)..but the economical way out (temporarily) is to bypass the core like mentioned...until the weather gets colder or you need to defrost the windshield next time.

The Galant is a 6.2 hour job for a shop..you can compute the flat rate to see what the expense for labor is...but don't forget that any parts for a Mitsubishi are very $$$$$$ !!!

If you fortunately have the Galant Sigma, the labor is only 3.9 hrs...but neither include the AC system and the removal, storage and re-installation of the freon and associated jobs with that part of the evolution.

Sorry for that..they are not easy to work upon and it's best left to a pro.

650140 2008-03-18 05:17:00 No strange smell in car. Sounds to expensive to fix. How do I bypass the heater hoses? radium (8645)
650141 2008-03-18 10:54:00 Have a look at the LH side of the firewall (in the engine bay), you'll see two black rubber hoses a bit thicker than your thumb connected to metal or plastic necks (part of the heater core) close to each other, passing through the firewall; disconnect these (may be fairly stuck on, attempt to twist them away from the pipes once you loosen the clips; dont use pliers to grip them, you'll crush the pipes (very thin)), get a suitable sized piece of pipe and join them together. Alternatively, find where each hose joins to the engine, and take the free end of one hose and fit it where the other is connected at the engine (hope you followed that!)
Refill cooling system, adding antifreeze (important, prevents electrolysis between the various metals in your engine and radiator).

650142 2008-03-19 05:05:00 I will have a look thanks. Would this disable my Aircon? Thanks radium (8645)
