649619 2008-03-15 09:08:00 Had a shower this morning, wiped floor in front of the shower door, went to go out the bathroom door and bang. The glass wall on the shower unit went of like a gunshot. Scared the heck out of me! The wall has thousands of cracks in it, but hasn't fallen out of the frame. Nothing hit or touched it.
Any sugestions (serious) :), as to the cause.

649620 2008-03-15 09:17:00 The glass is tempered, any surface flaw will cause it to shatter. If there's a grub screw in the surrounding frame that's done up too tight onto the glass, that could cause it. PaulD (232)

Though in this case it could be the change from one extreme heat to another.

649624 2008-03-15 22:13:00 Had a new shower installed 12 months ago, and last month the side glass wall of it exploded even though there was nobody in the room at the time. Went just like yours BobM. Had the builder who installed it have a look at it and he had no explanation. Rang my insurance company and they said to go ahead and get a glass firm to repair it, and even my no claim rebate would not be affected.

The glazier could offer no explanation, but as PaulD said a grub screw in the surrounding frame that had been done up too tight could have caused it. Had to wait a few days for another piece of tempered glass to arrive.

649625 2008-03-15 22:20:00 I've heard of this happening with LCD screens too, sometimes something can be too tight and when go to pick your monitor up or close your laptop lid the screen just cracks

a friend of mine also had the screen on his digital camera crack for no reason too

But try telling the shop it wasn't your fault and you'll have fun

649626 2008-03-21 11:15:00 Follow up on exploding shower wall. The Glass man came around and removed the glass frame and took it back to his workshop. No screws in the frame, just plastic dowels holding it together. Nothing in the frame that could have caused it to break. The local Plumbing World guy said they have had 3 explode over the last few years.! Insurance was no problem, no claim rebate not affected either. BobM (1138)

649628 2008-03-22 01:28:00 sounds very much like poor glass tempering, just the the cheap tempered glass used in the explodeing oven doors (which where well known about many years before fairgo ever mentioned it). tweak'e (69)
